I can think of ways to improve this.
1. Expand the operation area of train stations to say twice it's normal range.
2. Fix tracks to they are not limited to where they can put there footers.
I took the time to place a large train station, only to have to remove and replace it because the track would not move it's footer. It kept trying to place it right over an existing tunnel for domes.
That was bad.
It would be great if the footing could have adjusted for this.

3. Allow tracks to go up and down hills. Works in real life so why not here?
Water pipes can do it in game.

4. Being able to place tracks without a train station. I could use this to choose the best route for the train.
