need some explanation on how track textures work
so i understand the idea of different textures for if it's built, if it's a blueprint, all that-

what im confused about is what does "diamond" mean as a texture mode? the documentation just says it "ignores all layers except base" but this doesn't mean anything when i don't know what it's supposed to be used for or accomplish in it's existence

A diamond is a diamond crossing, i.e. two tracks simply intersecting. In real life this area of the track (as well as swtiches/turnouts) is typically better maintained than others to ensure smooth safe crossing. You can see it in pretty much any aerial photo, typically darker color. The same can be done in NIMBY, it's just cosmetic look. If the track crossing is on a concrete (slab) base, usually no special visualization is needed.

Apart from the base, all other elements of a diamond crossing (rail, sleepers, border) are used from the "master" track, just a different base is used.
