Modding questions
So i wanted to make a kind of snowy christmas map and i saw that all the official maps use photo files as their backgrounds instead of the background paint tool in the editor. I was wondering how i could incorporate this into my map seeing as the default brushes aren't doing the trick. I tried to get information by going into DoorKickers/data/textures/background and looking at those .dds files but when i open them up in paint.net it only shows me the walls, not the actual texture of the ground. Unfortunately, i can't use Photoshop as i am to broke to get it :P Any help?

For creating a custom background from scratch there is no real easy way to do it other than using Photoshop. I tried using GIMP to create a map and it just doesn't work very well. GIMP messes up the alpha channels.

You can get Photoshop as a 30 day trial. I'd download that and see if it works out for you. You can find a tutorial on map creation through Photoshop on the offical killhousegames forum.

As for the offical maps I can show you in GIMP how to convert the DDS background textures into an editable format. Convert the DDS files to TGA and the decompose and then recompose using GIMP.

See the video below. Hope it helps.

As a side note using this method will remove the alpha channels so you will need to re add them.

Thanks, i'll see if i can use GIMP. I realize you said it messed up the alpha channels but i guess i'll try anyway.
