Children Mod
If a child mod was possible, which only included children and teens (no babies or pregnancy), what would your suggestions be? I'm just making this public to see what your thoughts are. Maybe this mod shouldn't even be considered. How do you feel about it?

Please keep them within the realm of possibility, and don't go overboard with expectations. And if the dev team would rather not have this mod made, which should be respected by everyone, then this discussion will be eliminated.

My current thoughts:
  • Two age groups. "Child" (<= age 13) and "Teen" (age >=14 and < 18). Minimum age is 11.
  • Skill caps based on age. Both the children and the teens would have lower skill caps (lower allowed skill), so they wouldn't be as useful in your camp as a grown-up. As they grow up their skill caps will increase.
  • Damage. They would cause less damage than grown-ups, but also take less damage. Or no damage at all, they could be immortal and never take damage.
  • Altered Combat AI. If attacking was enabled, they would always try to keep a distance to enemies instead of tanking and approaching the threat like grown-ups do. They would also dodge more frequently.
  • Not allowed to attack. Children could have their ability to attack removed, while teens could start helping out in combat. It could also depend on the type of attacker. Should they be able to attack humans as well, or only zombies?

Whats currently in:
  • Children and Teens.
  • New dialogue for children / parents.
  • Different Combat behaviour. Children will either keep a distance from combat, or enter nearby buildings for safety. Teens can help in combat but will be more cautious.
  • Damage, Sleep, Thrist, Hunger, Stamina Tweaks. Children and teens cause leas damage, need more sleep, are more thirsty and hungry, but they have more available stamina.
  • Children and teens have limited equipment options. As weapons, they can only use hunting knives. Teens have less restrictions, but the only firearm they can equip are pistols.
  • Children can't do base chores (harvest trees or rocks, farm or build). Teens can help out just as adults.
  • Less inventory space. They can't hold as many items in their inventory. They have weaker bodies after all.
  • They are more affected by morale events (good and bad). Little bipolar monsters.
  • Skill limits. Children have low skill caps, which increase as they get older.
  • Spawn in the world as a child, and your parent (or parents) will spawn with you.

Starting scenario as a family would be quite cool, but how do they age. Are you forever child, or do you mature?

As for me, I always detested lack of children in post-apo games and movies. I know this is a big taboo for USA pops, but it is sooo unrealistic.

Dev may not have an opinion on this mod, but Steam might. If anything, this should end on nexus, if steam refuses.

DF has children all right and you can eat their bodies even, but it was originally a text based roguelike, so perhaps this is different proposal to animated model for some folks.

Of course! Aging is a thing, right now every character ages 1 year every 15 in-game days. That's just the default behaviour, so it can be changed in the settings for thoese who want to slow it down (or speed it up)

One year every 15 in game days? Really? Like, WTH man?

Absolutely make this mod just for this setting - 1 year per year is fast enough.

Well, not every person playing is going to last 365 in-game days (let alone 4 years to see their kids become young adults and actually become helpful in their community). Players tend to get bored with their community after a while. If the aging rate was set that low (1-1 year), they wouldn't see their kids grow, which isn't really the point. That's why it's configurable though, so to each their own

But I'll have that in mind. Maybe a more realistic approach would be preferred by everyone

Afair, 1y in this game is not 365 days, it's more like 60 or 90?
So one in game year would be something like that. I'm doing a longplay with travelling south and I'm on my 7th map, this is like 4th winter in-game, so I guess any 14y old I started with would be celebrating 18 birthday.
Honestly, make sure to put in birthday cake, so we could gift it to our toons who reached this age :)

Maybe even 3 types, bland, sweet and spicy, just in case :)

Also, on a side note: this game needs potato plant and cornmeal as vanilla.

Oooh I see, 60-90 days sounds much more feasible. I'll put the default aging setting around there!
