Discontinued doesn't mean it doesn't work atm, just that it will probably not get updates.. Some may continue to work without issues, while others might not
They're basically literal.. in a sense that Steam rigs it to heavily favor mods created in the last 3 months / week (depending on which list you look at) and has very little to do with what was actually popular in that period of time. For example a mod that works perfectly fine but was created 6-7 months ago would never show up on that list even if it has 10x the daily downloads as the top one on the list. Etc.
For the mod page yes that’s true. But for the collections page it isn’t. Many of the collections on the first page of most popular have mods that are 1+ years old if not older that still work perfectly fine and most of those collection pages are already ordered correctly so you don’t have to try to figure out which mod goes where.
For someone returning that doesn’t want to spend an hour or more looking for mods then trying to order them where they don’t crash to desktop and just wants to jump right in and deal with it later this is ideal.
Though personally I have never used collections as a go-to source to find mods.. in fact in my second-hand experience (troubleshooting issues of other players coming in with bug reports) it can be somewhat counter-productive. (usually bloated lists that are for specific servers and some may or may not contain mods that no longer work), but with that being said if you're careful then sure, that can definitely be a good place to get ideas from.
Personally what I would recommend if someone wanted to add mods who hasn't been playing with mods up to now is to first decide the core features that they "need".
In my case the bare minimum is having a minimap (which is why I eventually made one when the ones I've been using broke) and something to list the damage values I'm doing since I always like to know.
And then play the game and go from there... as you play you will often feel certain things lacking and you think to yourself "I wish I could do this... that... etc." so then go and check if there's a mod for it.. and if you find one, add it! Grow your own mod collection to how you like to play :)
do they work with the new heros update?
