Workshop Contributor Abuse
I find it very disrepectful that some players think they can use my ship designs without my permission and republish them on workshop as thier own works without seeking my prior permission or approval. I have several contributions and collections with the Galactic Civilzations III Workshop. I keep finding others making ship set styles and altering my race civilzation mods and uploading my ship design works and republishing them on workshop without asking and taking undeserved credit for works that they did not create.

My understanding of the Steam Subscribers Agreement prohibits users from redistributing the original work of other contributors without permission, This should also include prohibiting users from making their own ship set styles from my workshop items and collections and republishing them on Workshop. It is still blantant redistribution without permission regardless.

Those making ship set styles from items and altering the race civ mods the original contributors contributions without their permision should have them removed and banned from workshop. The rule regarding redistribution of original creators work without permission should also apply to anyone that creates a ship set style or afters a civs they did not originally create of the original contributors work and republishing in to Workshop should have that collection removed from workshop for redistiribution without permision under Steams Subscriber Agreemrent under User Created Content: Section 6, paragragh D.

Given the fact that the original creators have already published thier work on workshop, it makes absolutely NO sense for others to make ship set styles or alter an authors original Mods works and republish it to workshop.

This abuse needs to be stopped!

If it were me, I'd be happy that other people were recognizing and redistributing the hard work that I created specifically for other people to enjoy. I mean - making content and handing it out for free use is what this (modding) is all about. So I don't understand when people get upset about their work being gathered into a compilation. If you're so protective of your work then don't make it public in the first place.

Given the fact that I already have collections of my work up on Steam Workshop available to the entire GC3 community there is really NO EXCUSE for anyone to make additional collections of my work and republish it to Steam Workshop without asking. That is infact redistribution and should be a violation of steam's subcribers agreement.

This is not about recognition, it's about RESPECT! Nor am I the only designer that feels this way.

I created my content for personal use and published it on Workshop for that reason and not to be added to anyone's collection and republished back on workshop. If the collections were private I would not mind as much since they are not in Steam public domain but when they are republished in Steam Workshop's public domain, that is indeeed redistribution.

I find it very disrespectful that no one asks me if they may make collections from my published work here on Steam. I never asked anyone to help me make my work reconized. I did it on my own letting my ship design skill speak for itself. I never asked for anyone's help.

Maybe you should browse through my collections and look at all the positive comments. Its pretty obvious you do not have a full years investment into designing ships for the game for others to enjoy for thier personal use.

There are those not recognizing your work. They do not ask for permission to redestribute your work and some believe once it is downloaded and saved to their game, it is now their property to be released as their own work. This thread is about disrespect by only a very few who are most likely to young to know or understand or to those that this is aimed at that do not care. EG: Pulling designs down to protect it is like Coke removing their product from the shelves because someone bought a bottle, repackaged it and restocked it as their own. I do not believe Coke would be overly fond of that happening.

Just my 2 cents.. If you want to create a collection of work to share with the public, You either do your own work and create your own ships ... or.. you ask permission to use someone elses.

Rathnaga, The people posting here wanting creations respected certainly don't need any help with being recognized. We have all had ships in the most popular ships list. Steam rules prohibit using items without permission. Respect the rules and respect our wishes.
Your all right this issue is about various levels of respect let me ask you something do you expect a 2 year old to read rules and regulations and then follow them? Of course not you would be crazy they dont even know how to read. Most players these days are just looking to play and make it easy for other people to play the same races as them. So they make a package to use with everyone they play to speed up the set up process for a new map. There not trying to be disrespectful they simply like most people clicking yes on the rules and regulations without paying attention. I would like to also ask is your art work completely yours for the factions you make and play many of these factions use copy righted art work like the star trek and star wars. That work is all copy righted and illegal for anyone to post. If you go deep into the belly of the beast here you will find that 90% of the things made here even ships that look like movie made ships are infact breaking copy right infringment. So in closing if we get crazy over copy righting everything there just going to close down steam workshop.

It called "fair use" as long as we are not demanding payment or making a profit off from it to provide Star Trek/Star Wars ship styles, we are within our legal limit to use ship designs that resemble Star Wars and Star Trek ships and factions. This also includes other TV or movie based themes. This falls under fan fiction for the game. Using what the game provided no one is making exact replications nor can it be done with tools provided in game.

Again this is more about respect and asking permission from the original ship designer to add them to your personal public collection and at least thanking the designers for their hard work and contributions. We do not even get that much from most of the users here on steam.

@Dr. Spruce...

Firstly, You Sir, are absolutely correct..

I will be the first to admit that I got caught up in the whole "workshop popularity contest" and forgot why I create things in the first place; For others' enjoyment. If people want to play around with my ships and post them in their own collections, so be it. It's a video game.. I had fun creating stuff, they have fun playing with my creations.. its a win win.

To answer your question: Yes, All of my artwork for factions fg, bg, logo, ect are my own creations using 3d poser and photoshop. All of my custom faction ships are also my own original creations. The Maquis collection ships and 2 ships in my Nasa Collection are recreations from pictures on the internet and I assumed it would be considered fan art. Even though I am not big fan of doing recreations, it's honestly the fastest way with the least amount of thought to get ships up and noticed on the work shop.

Sadly, most designers with really nice original works go un-noticed due to the sheer number of star trek/star wars ships that are overtaking the workshop.. So you may have to do some digging, but when you do find them, they are totaly worth it.

I know what you mean about original ships going without getting much notice. The stats on my ships were like hitting a concrete wall at 100 mph to my pride about my ships. I cannot upload for some reason anymore and have not felt the urge to fix it. As a matter of fact I have just about quit designing ships.
Amaro Kai 156 25 Feb, 2016 @ 12:34am
Ed, I get it about the pride factor.. It sucks when you work for hours to put together something nice and it goes un-noticed.

But let me share this with you... I don't have a huge following on here, 23 to be exact... some of my ships have hundreds of subscribers... most have 10 subscribers if that. When I got back on the workshop and posted a couple of my collections, I had a few of comments saying "I missed your ships" "I love these" "Thank you for comming back, this made my day". I tell you, it really put things into perspective for me.

If complete strangers can take the time out of their day to write something kind, welcome me back to the community and let me know I was missed; then who am I to go around demanding anything..

My followers are fans of my work, even if I only had 1, It's still somone who appreciates my work and enjoys my designs. So I am just going to enjoy designing ships, upload it for whoever wants to enjoy them and be happy with that. enough said.
Omnibus 999 25 Feb, 2016 @ 2:32am
About 70% of my works are original although half of them may well be inspired by other things or a nod to something else. Then there is my fan based art I made that is for star trek or star wars fans (in truth, made to see if I can), although half of those designs, I made as concept designs either to fill a roll that wasnt there, but made so it would fit in to that design type and style. I agree that much of the unique and original designs get over looked in favor of something that is familiar. So I do try to out do myself with my original designs and if people over look them, it is they that miss out. But the one person that finds these hidden jems later on, I believe appreciate it a lot more, which makes it worth while for me.
Airmaster 10 25 Feb, 2016 @ 8:04am
I totally agree, this is why I made the Terran Sovereignty with ships set. A completely original faction and shipset. I was trying to create something that was not Star Trek nor in the Star Trek universe however, with the new movies out and soon to be released Star Wars and Star Trek are very popular.

I want to give fans of my work what they want but I also want to do other factions and ship set that are my own creations. Some recognition and a thank you is all we are asking for.

Just a little respect.

really? Just a little? I think "we" get tons of respect and recognition. And from reading through ship comments, "We" get pleanty of thank yous too.

How about "We" stop posting as "We" and start talking in "I'". I feel, I want, I need rather then this whole We business.. I speak for me and no one else.. and no one else speaks for me.

just sayin
Airmaster 10 25 Feb, 2016 @ 12:46pm
Sorry I strongly disagree! Nearly every ship I have made for the game is in someone elses damn collection and " I " never even got so much as a nod or even a thank you from most of them. I have 8 collections and most of the comments are from long time followers who have been following my work since the beginning and not just on workshop. That by my estimate rounds out to about less than 10% on the total users that have subscribed and added my ships to thier own private and public collections.

Allow me to mention also that every time I upload a new ship design a few paticular users add it to thier public collections and do not even say thanks. Thats what's this is all about!!!!!!

No "what this is all about" is a sense of entitlement and hypocricy... and frankly I can't speak for others but I am getting a little tired of it. If you want to talk about respect and getting peoples permissions to use their things... How about we talk about you dragging my name into YOUR fights without ever once asking my permission?? Where was the respect there? Sorry sir, you want a little respect.. EARN IT!
