Yesterday I ran through my campaign twice and decided it was all finished and I was ready to publish. I haven't published a level yet, so I saw the popup that says you have to test it, and I thought "No problem I'll just run through the campaign again and be done."

Then my horror began....

#1 Cannot use controller when level testing. Why not? I only play Broforce on controller. Forcing me to use keyboard on my genuinely challenging levels is like having to learn the game over almost.

#2 Why is multiplayer forced? Even with controller unplugged, for some reason it defaults to co-op? Why? For me playing single player, this gives me a HUGE handicap.

The end result of this is I have Xpadder hooked up to be able to play on controller to test the levels. But with co-op forced, I can only play in the SUPER AWKWARD method of controlling both players at the same time.... which is terrible.... It works ok sometimes when I get complimentary bros, like Brohard and Rambro, but when I get two bros with different attack styles, say Cherry Broling and Commander Broddock, it's extremely awkward to have to control them both at the same time.

Now this is my first time, so perhaps I'm doing something totally wrong. I was able to awkwardly push my way through to level 14-15 on my campaign, but at that point so far the editor has crashed twice before I could complete my campaign. I'm going to try again today, but I hate the awkward controls.

Tl;dr Is there any way I can test my level using the built-in controller support for my Xbox controller, in single player mode rather than co-op?

yes not being able to use controller is a major problem... the devs said they are going to fix it still, it shouldnt force co op check your keybinding in the options and see if u have any overlapping in other keyboard setups. if your levels are long load time windows shows a faulse crash----> give it some more time to load.

i had to get controller companion on steam and rebind the keys so i could even upload my levels..i hope they fix this soon. also mention this in the other threads, i dont think the devs look here very often...

Ok, figured out the co-op issue. If you have a controller plugged in, it will force co-op. So basically it's impossible to play with a controller even using Xpadder because it will default to KB+M player plus controller player. That's what I was dealing with yesterday.

I unplugged controller and rebinded keys in a way that should work for me. Definitely weird to play Broforce on keyboard but here we go =D

its not forced coop its your key setup! u have 2 keys set to the same thing, look over your keybinds in the options real good even if u didnt set keys for the other keyboards... i use xbox one controller and controller companion and dont have this problem<--- i only use this when i have to do the final upload test.... the devs have said that xpadder is something u dont want to use with the game it messes stuff up!

It's cool, I rebinded keyboard controls and it's fine. After doing this, gotta say that the default keybindings are terrible, who plays games on arrow keys these days? But kudos to the devs for allowing full key remapping. I set to WASD movement, Left mouse Attack and Right mouse Special and it's all good.

However, I'm still crashing on level 14, not when loading but during play when a lot of enemies are on screen. :p

in a last case resort u can always do what i did.... make a area trigger that ends the level and hide it in the ground somewhere. hope this helps some to bro, it sux for us not to be able to test levels with a controller!! like how the game is intended to play!!!

I've tried publishing 7 or 8 times now, always crashes on level 13 or 14. Game does NOT crash in normal play on those levels.

I emailed the developers with the crash files and my campaign files. Hopefully they can fix it.

I spent about 150 hours working on this campaign and honestly, it's pretty damn epic! Would be a shame if I can't get it posted online.

the most the devs can do for u is look at the crash logs... they dont have the time to touch your levels! have u tried my hidden exit idea? also did u post any of this in the development forms?

If it always crashes you could try posting it in 2 parts (levels 1-10 and levels 11-20), it could help (unless it´s something specific of level 13 or 14). I know it´s not the same as a huge epic campaign but it´s better than nothing.
