I would say it is still wise to use as little of them as possible though, just because of how overwhelming they all can be at once.
If you just use a couple of general content mods like VFE Pirates and Vanilla Armour Expanded, then it'll be fine. If you, on top of that, use a few mechanical overhauls like VFE Empire/Deserters or Vanilla Psycasts Expanded, or Vanilla Trading Expanded, it'll still not be too bad. It only seems to get to be too much when you add pretty much everything that has even one neat-looking thing in it.
