[mod idea] you're mining materials to ship; fail and you're cooked
tried to explain the basic idea in the thread name. it could be like a quest that starts in some point of time when your base is established. your home planed found you after the crash and they say that the planet is rich in some material you need to send back home. at the same time there's a dangerous faction on the planet and it may be not worth risking.

so, you're either shipping N amount of material per year lurking across the planet to find it, or they destroy the planet. in exchange they send you some good stuff. optional and something that isn't shown anywhere: you can actually destroy that faction for an alternate ending. the planet won't be destroyed if you don't meet the demand, but if you don't meet it you have two ways to wrap it up for your guys from another planet:

1. sorry, I'll do what I can (and this will buy you some time).
2. you can't just use me like that as a pawn, this is my new home – and you'll need to fight your own «homies». after a while a new faction spawns with one base and they send raids. you need to attack the base and kill everyone.

providing tons of such materials at this point should make a happy end without the massacare. at the same time, if that enemy faction is still intact, and you happend to send all that tons of material, they betray you: thanks for helping, but the planet will be destroyed anyways. at this point you're either destroying that enemies and your homeland leaves you alone with a sour taste in your mouth, or you can beat their fannies on the asteroid where they plan to destroy the planet (think about death star from star wars, but more modest). obviously, Odyssey content. at this time you can make your way to their asteroid base and kill everyone there (maybe earning a powerful orbital weapon at the same time).

basically, it's a separation scenario. I'm not from the US, but I can see some parallels between this and the US/UK history.
