Maybe to better understand, can you give us the name of one of the mods that you're trying to load in the game?
Is a specific starting age needed, or some other quick battle setting?
Reason is... I think if you play it in singleplayer, it treats these things like scripts, not necessarily a Scen or Mod.
If you play this on multiplayer, you should have a better time opening it up. Also, you can put all the slots to computers if you don't wanna play with Humans. This should still reduce the risk of crashing, since you are the only human connected to the server for that particular game.
The Great War mod only works in the Industrial Age as far as I'm aware, and you can only use the Germans, French, British and Americans. If you get any crashes, that may be because the mod is still in alpha.
If you go on top and select the mod, then That should work fine. If you are using a Scenario, then thats where u can see the problem as I listed above.
