i had a go at detailing a possible way the elevator could be used in a similar way as you describe + lots of other ideas i had (i posted it in the past so a few are in the game currently though, which is cool.

(modding the game seems to hard for me with programming and visual studios etc, i tried to add one of the modders from workshop as a friend but no joy yet) :)
Right now, I'm currently playing with the Fight for Universe mod.

It has alot of very nice changes and you can easily change numbers in a .txt editor to fit your needs. Things like way bigger backpacks, bigger stack sizes, things like that.
(do you know if it can be added to an existing save?)
