Shieldmaiden Dynasty

Description

The target of this mod is to give norse characters the feeling of living in a pure warrior society. This version of the mod adds an enatic spin to this society and focuses mainly on shieldmaidens, but there is now also a version with equal rights for men and women. https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/workshop/filedetails/?id=1670893554

How does it work?

The mod allows only the enatic succession law for norse ruler (females only) and gives every norse person in the game a trait, which makes them ineligible for rulership. The only way to get rid of this trait is by becoming a shieldmaiden, which in return guarantees that only shieldmaidens will be able to rule. Of course, this in itself would be way to hard to play, because becoming a shieldmaiden isn't really easy in the original game. Therefore I change several things in addition. Let's start with the traits.

NEW TRAITS:
-Nordic Person – Every norse person, who isn't a ruler with level count or higher, will receive this. It prevents one from inheriting titles. (There are some ways for new characters to be generated where they won't immediately receive the trait. For this there is a small event, which will tag them accordingly within 6 ingame days)

- Shieldmaiden (women) / Heroic Blood (men): Characters with these traits will be able to rule and inherit titles. To get them you don't need certain skills or traits anymore. You just need an appropriate amount of prestige. How do you gain this? By duelling.

- Honorseeker: Close relatives of rulers or characters with the traits, which normally allow one to become a shieldmaiden, will receive the trait honorseeker. Honorseeker will duell each other. Based on their traits and combat rating they will search for weaker, equal or stronger enemies. Depending of their targets strength they will gain an appropriate amount of prestige. At the beginning of the game you will be able to adjust the lethality of these duels via a game rule.

- Einherjar (name for the heroes residing in valhalla): Old honorseeker, who aren't close relatives of a ruler anymore, will gain this trait. They will aim for a honorable death and therefore duells between einherjar are much more lethal. If an einherjar is killed by another one, the dead one will gain the trait vallhalla bound.

- Elected: Similiar to shieldmaiden / heroic blood, but for civil rulers. Leaders of theocracies, republics of level count or patricians will gain this.

INGAME:
This mod is designed to be used together with my other mod "Attribute Succession" (focused on prestige), which works similar to nomad succession and favors the close relative of the ruler, which has the greatest amount of prestige.

So, how does it work practically? Starting rulers (counts or higher) will instantly receive the traits heroic blood or shieldmaiden. Your adult children and all other close relatives will become honor seeker and start dueling. They will continue dueling even after receiving shieldmaiden / heroic blood (becoming eligible as heirs), because only the one with the biggest amount of prestige will inherit. The only way to make them stop dueling is by giving them a title.

Should you die without an eligible heir (= a character without the trait nordic person) → game over. Please remember: Only adults can become shieldmaidens or receive heroic blood.

In this enatic version of the mod, males will partake in fighting as honor seekers, but they won't receive heroic blood, which means only women will be able to inherit in the end (an exception might be, if a male character starts an adventure).

REFORMATION:
This mod forces you to chose Enatic Clans/Equality (depending on your version choose ENATIC or EQUALITY for the FLAVOR RULE at the beginning of the game) during reformation. To compensate for this, the perks Enatic Clans/Equality were merged with "Sons of Ragnarok", which means you will also retain your ability to use rivers & to start invasions.

REQUIREMENTS
The Mod needs the DLCs listed on the right side (Holy Fury OR the Old Gods should suffice, though both would be best). Furthermore you'll need my other mod "Attribute Successions". If you want, you can also use my Flavor mod, which makes the unreformed norse religion more matriarchal (Shieldmaiden Dynasty) / absolute cognatic (Heroic Dynasty).

IF YOU DON'T HAVE HOLY FURY you must use the Flavor mod, because it makes some necessary adjustements.

IMPORTANT
Upon starting the game for the first time, you should save it and reload it. The reason for this is that there are so many norse characters, that the mod has problems to tag all of them with the trait nordic person at once.

INCOMPABILITY
To be honest: The easiest way would be if you open zip file in 'C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\mod' and just look inside which files are listed there. Any other mod, who change the same files, will be incompatible.

No, sorry. The duel mechanic became incredible complex with Holy Fury and I just don't feel confident enough to modify that or make a parallel system just for the duels initiated by my mod.

I'd not like to disable dying altogether. Swords are sharp. But for both of my daughters to die at age 19 and 17, that is too much. Is there a half-way setting?

I looked in the game files again to make sure I got that right: With the mock duel setting death during duel is impossible and there is a modifier that reduces the chance to lose a limb during a mock duel by 99%. The worst you can get is a normal injury (the trait wounded), which gives -1 health and should be easily survivable for a young person (if it doesn't evolve to an infection).

Whichever setting is the default. I still think that it seems kinda hacky that you have to land your daughters at an incredibly young age just for them not to die. Doesn't really work with the warrior society: who would stop fighting and settle down at age 19?

That said, I like the idea behind the mod (just bummed that I went game-over), and I'll try it again with a different setting on the rule.

On which setting did you have the lethality rule when starting the game? With the mock duel setting it should be pretty unlikely for them to die (at least not directly). Honorseeker will also stop duelling when they're landed, so you could give them a title as soon as they reach shieldmaiden status. To make them receive the shieldmaiden trait faster you could give them honorary titles (for some titles this works even for children) or a council position - both things give them monthly prestige. They only need 200 prestige to receive the trait.

I played as Rurik, and went game-over after 50 years. I had two daughters, and both were slain in duels before the age of 20. Given that they also cannot inherit anything before they are adult, this is a really hard game to play.

There are enough archaeologists and historicans on either site of the debate, which is why I try to avoid this discussion, because people start going in circles pretty fast.

This mod looks quite ambitious and well done, despite the fact that Shieldmaidens likely only existed in Norse oral tradition, so I'm rather iffy about them(I use the mod to deactivate shieldmaidens for realism).
