Aspect Ratio Mask Overlays

Popis
The largest collection of aspect ratio masks you're probably going to find!

Looking to make a movie in a specific aspect ratio, but frustrated by Source Filmmaker's almost exclusively 16:9 workflow? Use these to help frame your shots before committing to a specific resolution! It's the digital equivalent of slapping some cut up black construction paper over the lens, but it's better than nothing.

What do I do?

Add the Material Overlay clip to your Effects track, then open that clip in the Element Viewer. Click the "..." button to the right of the "material" key, then search for "aspect_masks" in the material selector. You should see every aspect mask come up. Simply select one, and it will be applied as an overlay to your shot.

Hey, it didn't work on my poster!

It's an SFM thing. You'd probably be better off exporting a poster with a resolution that matches the expected aspect ratio.

In fact, I probably don't need to tell you this, but don't try to render anything with these on unless you're feeling really lazy. They're just guides for setting up shots in the 16:9 viewport, and won't look nearly as good as a correctly sized shot--or, as I prefer, a flat 16:9 render that can be cropped and panned during the editing phase.

I tried to render my video at a different aspect ratio, and it broke!

When dealing with video, Source Filmmaker hates--and i mean hates--working in any aspect ratio other than 16:9. This is a software limitation that can't be worked around. You can leave the ratio overlays up when rendering, but I'd personally recommend disabling the overlay before rendering, outputting a flat 16:9 video, then cropping it down to the desired resolution in your video editor of choice.

Aspect Ratio List

Ratio
Also Known As
Description
1.19:1
MovieTone Ratio
Used by movies of the 1920s and 1930s filmed on FOX MovieTone, one of the first film formats to support optical audio tracks.
1.25:1
5:4
1280x1024 equivalent, also used for photography.
1.375:1
Academy Ratio
The standard aspect ratio of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, circa 1932.
1.37:1
Academy Ratio
The same, but rounded down.
1.3:1
4:3
Standard definition aspect ratio, usually associated with older TVs and monitors.
1.43:1
IMAX Full Frame
IMAX 70mm full frame. Played on screens up to eight stories high, and projected by a bulb as bright as the sun itself. Accept no substitutes.
1.556:1
14:9
Aspect ratio commonly used as a halfway point between 16:9 and 4:3, usually seen in commercials that run on both SD and HD broadcasts so less gets cut off or pillarboxed.
1.5:1
3:2
8-perf 35mm photograph. Also used by the Game Boy Advance.
1.667:1
5:3
Super 16mm, and used by animators working with the Disney CAPS system.
1.6:1
16:10
Tall widescreen format almost exclusively used for monitors. The superior workstation screen ratio.
1.85:1
35mm Widescreen Flat
Flat, non-anamorphic widescreen ratio.
1:1
Square
Known across the lands to be, in a word, "hip."
2.165:1
iPhone Ratio
Aspect ratio used by the iPhone X, 11, and 12.
2.2:1
70mm Todd-AO
A classic widescreen film format.
2.35:1
CinemaScope (Classic)
The ratio everyone assumes is the current CinemaScope standard. It was... once.
2.37:1
21:9 (Ultrawide)
The aspect ratio of choice for the most epic of gamers.
2.39:1
CinemaScope (Modern)
Standard aspect ratio for CinemaScope today.
2.55:1
CinemaScope (Original)
CinemaScope's awkward teenage years, when it had really started to mature, but hadn't quite figured out optical sound yet.
2.59:1
Cinerama
Imagine this: You want a widescreen movie, but there aren't any widescreen cameras or projectors. What do you do? Record a movie with three side-by-side cameras, and show it on three side-by-side projectors.
2.76:1
Ultra Panavision 70
About as wide as you can get before it just gets ridiculous. Ben-Hur made it cool in 1959, and Tarantino made it cool again in 2015.
2:1
Univisium
Made to bridge the gap between cinema and television during the advent of widescreen, relegated to a "flat" recording format that's good for cropping down to more interesting ratios.
4:1
Polyvision
The only way to watch the French war epic Napoleon.

1.19 is pretty close lol, but would you be able to add 1.2 or 6:5? For making reference images for 96:80 pixel art :P idk what mediums this ratio is used in otherwise tbh

Material overlays show up if you render a video or image sequence, but not if you render a poster. If you're trying to make a poster with the overlay, you'll need to bullshit it. Just render a 1-frame-long image sequence instead.

so if I am feeling lazy how do I render it with the overlay

All of the aspect masks are in the materials\scph\aspect_masks\ directory. If you need help on actually using material overlays like these, this tutorial has what you need to get started.
