The Molten Maar (Ancient Salamander) – High Rock Fables

Beskrivelse

Lore:

The lore for her can be read in the "unit & spell browser" menu in-game. I couldn't fit it in the page.

Unit Summary & Strategy:

The Molten Maar is an Ancient Salamander Regiment of Renown. The key difference between the Maar and the standard Salamander of the Ancient designation is that she’s not a Missile Beast, but a regular one. Now don’t let that make you go cross-eyed, she can still shoot fire, but now it’s a more powerful, activated ability that functions like Dragon breath, and boy is that fitting for the theme, for the Maar is a pyrokinetic powerhouse. Armour means nothing to her, the rapturous ire of her deeply perturbed being melts even the toughest armour into something that’d more resemble the Tacoma Bridge on opening day than anything reliable. She has a passive AOE that’s constantly doing fire damage around her, along with a drain to armour, leadership and melee attack. It’s like a Mortis Engine! Only it’s not some smarmy liquorice tart on a rickety wood motorised shopping cart going “LUL EVERYTHING DIES” (Yeah, no ♥♥♥♥, glad you’re all caught up on the manual to the planet, jackass), instead it’s a GIANT ANGRY FIRE LIZARD that views everything the way actual fire would look at a peaceful, serene forest after a lightning strike. It’s melee attacks also make the victim more vulnerable to fire, making the Maar’s target more susceptible to it’s AOE. Throw it in the middle of a Norscan mosh pit and watch it go to town and melt the whole army away like Mount Pompeii II: Roman Goo-a-loo. Something scary approaching? Use it’s fire breath, it’s an Armour-mashing geyser of ♥♥♥♥ You and other un-comforting statements. You ever wondered how it would look if Queen Ariel just went poof like a moth to flame? Would Katarina Vodka run for the hills Scooby Doo-style at the sight of Fire Incarnate? You ever wanted to watch a lizard just eat a Tank like it was a Cornetto? Does Gelt have a boiling point? You’ll find the answers to all of these, with the Maar.

Long story short, you know that part in Planet Earth where a Crocodile eats a Flamingo after it has a fall? And the Croc is flailing it around like trying to wave unsavoury bits off a carpet or bed sheets? Imagine that, now imagine the Crocodile is the Molten Maar, and the Flamingo is a Lord of Change.

Are you imagining it?

Good. Now you understand the Maar’s modus operandi.

That must sound like a pretty hefty package of lizard-y brawn and fury, which has no doubt brought you to the thought “Golly, what should I do if the AI brings her along and I have to fight it?”

Well it wouldn’t be very Total War if I simply told you “♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, RUN LIKE THE SPANISH CONQUISTADORS ARE MAKING THEIR SOUTH AMERICAN COMEBACK TOUR” as my initial thoughts are suggesting. Your best options are arrows, guns, artillery and monstrous infantry. Fire magic won’t do you much good, for evident reasons, and regenerating units are going to really wish they weren’t cursed with the ability to grow back that finger she just ate, for even more evident reasons. Keep your formations loose, and any ranged units or anti-large monsters nearby. Just watch out for that fire breath. Bolt thrower artillery can also really help. God help you if you’re playing as the Tomb Kings or the Wood Elves fielding the Treemen.

Oh, she can also be recruited by Khorne too. I guess even if you’re a local bit of wild life, being angry to the point of personal combustion can be enough to get a letter of acceptance to join the non-stop infinite choir of irate capital a’s that make up the Communal Khornate Existential Anthem. Good for you her, you know? Gotta diversity the portfolio. Blood for the etc etc!

For her Khornate version, she exchanges Primal Instincts for the Mark of Khorne, gaining Frenzy and a small bout of spell resistance, but losing out on extra buffs when her health is decreased; a more ‘star that burns twice as hot lasts half as long’ sort of approach. With Khorne lords, her stats can be raised with the red line skills “Harbingers of Death” & “Forged in Blood”.

Feedback with balance and lore is welcomed. I hope you enjoy.

How to Unlock:

As is customary for such units, she can be recruited from the RoR menu when a Legendary Lord reaches the applicable level.

-All major and minor Lizardmen factions can recruit her at level 20
--The Last Defenders of Xhotl can recruit her earlier, at level 15
-All major and minor Khorne factions can recruit her at level 22
--The Legion of the Gorequeen can recruit her at level 23

I've managed to get the Maar's fire breath animation work again, I think a recent update changed the animation indexes around.

I'm however having a problem in that I cannot for the life of me get any of my Warhammer mods updated on this workshop. Neither the game's launcher nor the community-made mod manager will allow me to update my works; This is puzzling and I'll keep searching for an answer, do try and bare with me for the time being.

same trouble as strazhari, it doesn't stand up to fire & the blast is not quite as face melting as it has been.

Update please!

It works, but it doesn't stand up to fire & the blast is not quite as face melting as it has been. Still among my favorite set of mobs though, hope to see more Fables in the future
