[ESS2] EMD SD80MAC Template

Description
EMD SD80MAC
(template)

This engine is ESS2 and WABSIM compatible
History

The EMD SD80MAC was a heavy locomotive produced by the GM Electromotive division from 1995 to 1996. 30 units were produced, all going to Conrail. the concept was to build a modern version of the SD45, which was EMD's previous 20 cylinder locomotive. the locomotive had C-C trucks like most heavy locomotives along with the new and popular AC traction motors. EMD also opted to move dynamic braking resistors to behind the engine in order to make the cab quieter during dynamic braking. It also, like most late variants of the SD70M and MAC series, had steerable trucks to reduce wear. It was later succeeded by the 6000 horsepower 16 cylinder SD90MAC bearing the 265H engine.

Although the unit was not produced in great numbers, it was still a fairly reliable locomotive. The engine was solid and functioned well, however the electrical systems were what caused most problems. The SD80MAC's biggest downside was that it was a fuel guzzler and that made it costly to operate. When Conrail went under, CSX and Norfolk Southern split up the railroad's assets, with both railroads obtaining SD80MACs. They served the two railways up until recently where they were retired. Despite many preservation attempts, in 2020 Norfolk Southern sold their remaining SD80MAC locomotives, marking the end of the SD80MAC. No units were preserved making this an extinct locomotive.

Startup

Open the fuse cabinet, Located on the back wall of the cab and flip all breakers on. Then flip the "Battery Knife Switch" in that same cabinet, hit the "Engine Run" "Generator Field" and "Fuel Pump" switches on the control stand, then hold the "Start Sequence" button on the rear wall of the cab until the sound of the engine balances out. Isolate the engine, insert the reverser handle, cut in brakes, hit the reverser buttons in whatever direction you desire, "R" being backward "-" being neutral and "F" being forward, and you are ready for operation.
