Description
JDL&E "Duplex" Freight Locomotive

This Locomotive class was designed for High-Speed Freight, however many (Such as 564) were also fitted with amenities for passenger service, such as steam heat piping. By burning diesel in it’s firebox, combined with the “Coast to Coast” tender, these locomotives can achieve extreme efficiency and ranges (See figure 4). The Duplex design also allows more power to be put down by the wheels, while still maintaining exceptional handling over curves for it’s size.





Important Information

Locomotive and Tender spawned separately;
Each one can be spawned in a normal train workbench!!!

(recommend using Switcher )


LOCOMOTIVE WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT TENDER

(see Figure 2 for info on Loco/tender connections)



Startup Guide
(see figure 1 to know where each control is)
  1. Connect all tender hoses/cables (see figure 2)
  2. Use the Manual Oil pump (a few seconds of holding should do)
  3. Bring the "Atomizer" to .15
  4. Press "Ignite fire"
  5. Wait for some pressure to build
  6. Use the "injector" to keep a good water level (see Firing Efficiently)
  7. Turn on the "compressor"
  8. Turn on the "dyno" and turn on "headlights" and "cab lights" as needed
  9. Press the "cut in" switch
  10. Press the "lead/trail" switch as needed (see Brake info)
  11. Move the independent brake to the "release" position and hold it there until the "brake cylinder pressure" reads 0
  12. Move the "reverser" all the way forward
  13. Open "throttle" slowly
  14. Bring "reverser" back to 0.4
  15. adjust "atomizer" as needed to increase efficiency (see Firing Efficiently )



Firing Efficiently
An important part of operating a steam locomotive is efficiency, although theirs nothing stopping you from running the engine with a constant roaring fire, as the safety valves keep the boiler from rupturing, it does waste both diesel and water.(and the hiss from safety valves is quite annoying :P ) The first way to achieve efficiency is to only fire as much as needed, and to think ahead, for example, when about to stop, lower the fire to a nice idle (.125 ish on the atomizer). Another way to achieve efficiency is to introduce water strategically, as cold water added to the boiler will lower pressure, however keep in mind that the water level should still be maintained between the 2 extremes on the sight glass.

For the Engineer: the reverser allows you to sacrifice some power for much higher steam efficiency by bringing it towards center, you may not even be able to keep up pressure without it!



Brake info
Although speeding along the track is fun, at some point you will have to stop. The brakes on this locomotive use Steam Wabsim to get a standardized and realistic experience. There are 2 brakes, independent and train brake, independent brakes only control the locomotive brakes, and the train brake allows you to control carriage brakes on the train. These brakes are non-self lapping, and thus have 4 positions (plus emergency on the train brake.):
  1. Release: this position charges the brakes, allowing them to release, on the independent brake, this is a sprung position, so you will have to hold it there until it is fully released.
  2. Lap: this position holds the current brake pressure
  3. Service 1: this position releases pressure slowly from the system, engaging the brakes.
  4. Service 2: same as service 1, just a bit faster.
  5. Emergency: very quickly applies brakes throughout the train (train brake only)

Realistic firing (or lack there of)
You may have noticed that I do not use my “realistic firing” controllers on this Locomotive, that is because I couldn’t figure out a good way to interface it with the diesel firebox, I assure you though, that my next realistic firing controller is going to work with all fireboxes, and is either going to use any math on steam locomotives I can find, or just going to use the actual chemistry math to get the most real experience you can get!

I forgot exactly, but it had to be somewhere around 120-140 mph, with a brick speed of about 65 mph

yep, I dont think its a problem of getting it to work at this point, that should be pretty easy, just of making it work well, and function to my standards is the problem lol

It really is a beautiful locomotive, shame it's one of many which fell to the slaughter. Although I am seeing some new steam locomotives pop up on the workshop which work great so I reckon you'll be able to get this beauty going again.

sadly not yet, I have some ideas that I have seen work though, so a fix is hopefully coming sooner than later, assuming school doesn't hit me too hard, I really do want to get this working though
