Short answer is: Yes, it's the consequence of the size of the map.
Long story is that it *could* be slightly improved, but I honestly think it is too much work for the results it could give. I you need a "lag comparison", you can try the Absolute Chaos mod, which has a similar GC map. Absolute Chaos has the performance enhancements I could add to UGC CE, so if you want to compare the two mods, feel free to try and see if it really makes a difference.

I have this same problem on the Galactic Conquest. This mod is absolutely amazing and I love what I've played of it, but I don't think my PC can handle the giant Galaxy Awaits GC mode, which is a shame cause it looks so much fun. It is super laggy for me, but I think it's my computer at fault.
