Love the list! But, there's a few things I'd argue:

I want to say Alliance is fanatic militarist and egalitarian. By wiki they don't have the largest fleet but they do have a powerful, reactionary one. And all the other races in the galaxy are constantly talking about how fearful they are of how large and expansive the humans have become in such a short time. I'd almost say militarist, egalitarian, and xenophobic if xenophobic wasn't so repulsive/pro-slavery.

Turians in my view are militarist, xenophile, and authoritarian. Going by their wiki page, they expand aggressively and have a decent amount of their fleet pulled from client-races as auxiliary, along with commiting unproductive members of their society to "hard labour" which could easily be viewed as a form of slavery/unpaid labour/etc. In practice and naming convention, they are almost identical to the Roman Empire, who were fanatical slavers, and while Mass Effect does not address their hard labour in the game, the wiki makes it seem like the most common form of punishment for those not contributing to Turian society. Straight from the wiki, "If rehabilitation fails, turians have no qualms about sentencing individuals to life at hard labor for the state." Civics are perfect though. Technically they are fanatically militaristic, but this is shown better by the Citizen Service civic than by being Fanatic Militarists. They have a massive, overwhelming fleet rather than relying on tactics and strategy (unlike the Alliance)

The Salarian government is super weird compared to the Science Directorate we all imagine from Mordin Solus' impressions. So while technically the presented empire is wrong I do prefer it over the weird feudal clan-based oligarchy that the wiki claims they have. Which would also be hard to incorporate into Stellaris. And Regent is a good title. Makes it seem like they are technically in power but only reigning in lack of a Dalatrass. Good way to show the matriarchy with the limits of the game.

Pre-flotilla Quarians really need to get more written about them. Not enough data to form consensus. One thing I've always thought that worked really well was to use the Distant Origins mod and give the Geth Rannoch and make the Quarians start on a random **** off planet. You can make the Quarians sort of post-flotilla, colonizing other worlds and moving past Rannoch but still with reclaiming it in their minds (they'd get a -1000 penalty to the Geth I think, have to check mod again)

Love the list though. And of course all of this is up for debate and I'm not saying I'm 100% right or anything, just my thoughts on it. Hopefully we can get a lot of opinions/debate on the topic and get them 100% within the limits of the game. :)

Thanks! =) Yeah it is really tough to balance. Firstly; Stellaris really does limit you in what you can achieve in replicating the species and governments of the ME Universe. Secondly; it's difficult to pinpoint as to what "era" one should choose for each Species. And thirdly; I wanted to make sure they balanced against each other.

(Second Point Expanded)
For example; I'd agree with you on the Alliance if it was post-first contact. Making them militarist, egalitarian and xenophobe would be the best fit. But like you said, xenophobe has too many strings attached in Stellaris.
Then again, I've made the Krogan a post-first contact civilisation with their slow breeding trait. Though without that trait, they'd be very powerful (already are in all games I've tested) and the trait values wouldn't even out.
The Quarians are also another era issue. If I decide to create the Geth, which is now more likely (more work n_n), then I'd definitely have a re-think.

(Third Point Expanded)
I also found that I had to over-exagerate the traits and ethics of each given species. So whilst the Turians could be considered xenophile (though I'd argue otherwise =P), they are definitely not as xenophilic as the Asari or other species.
The Salarians are known for using and developing "bleeding edge" technology; such as UV GUARDIAN Point Defense Systems and Stealth Dreadnoughts. Just to add regarding the Salarians; I really do wish I could create their feudal system more accurately, but whilst there are a few civics which would expand upon that idea, I currently feel like they are not expansive enough (gameplay and lore wise) to accurately represent the Salarians.

After reading your comment, and writing this one, I may go about and make my own traits for each of the major species.... Could be a nice little mod to use until Team Neccessity take over the world with their awesome ME mods. =P

Yea, system limitations are always gonna be the largest limiting factors. I only say Turians are xenophiles because of the client-empire stuff they do while in practice they really aren't. Could be seen as the difference between a militarist xenophile and a pacifist xenophile, but regardless.

Although I will stand by saying they are definitely more authoritarian than egalitarian. They have 27 different citizenship tiers and they focus on the productiveness of the society over anything else. "Turians value knowing one's own limitations more than being ambitious." Although they are a little contradictive in the way their primarchs are very "hands off" in terms of their rule. It's complicated and hard to really pin down. Honestly what would make this easier was if the non-fanatical ethics were a bit more soft-serve. Less slavery, oppression, pro/con AI-rights, etc. and made more flexible/open to interpretation.

I'll post my variations later tonight and try to explain my thoughts on em. Nothing major or much different from yours, just so I can fully flesh out my thoughts lol.

That's true, but at no point are you considered "less" due to your position in society. Everyone, no matter their background is capable of becoming Primarch (in theory). I do agree in that they are authoritarian too however. Turians very strictly adhere to the Hierarchy. It is an egalitarian society (being a meritocracy), but at the same time as it is a strict meritocracy, it is enforced via authoritarian means.

I could see this turning into a very lengthy discussion. Haha!

And I've started creating traits and ethics for the Krogan... I blame you, Captain Jin!

Doesn't the Authoritarian ethnic had a Meritocracy civic you can pick?
LostInACave 14 Mar, 2018 @ 3:07am
Yeah, you can still pick the Meritocracy and Citizen Service civics as long as your Democratic or Oligarchic. So you can't be a Fanatic Authoritarian, but you can be Authoritarian.
