Black Mesa

Black Mesa: Black Ops
Review for a really old mod
This is an alright mod, I played the remastered version so not everything I say may be correct. I think visually for the time the mod came out it looks great! Maybe not so much with the custom weapon models which most of them frankly don't look great save for the M4 which I actually think is modeled pretty decent. I did notice some weird lighting during scene transitions but that's more of a nitpick.

Gameplay wise I think the mappers did a great job most of the time. Most of the combat encounters felt fair and fluid, in tune with the design principals of Half Life's combat and especially Black Mesa's. I really enjoyed how in certain combat sections you can see HECU fighting Xen enemies which isn't all that common on the workshop.

However I do feel like it's quite samey with Black Mesa, there is a lot you could do with the combat encounters to make it moreso feel like you are playing as a Black Ops than the different weaponry, such as having Black Ops allies or access to unique equipment. As it stands though it pretty much plays as an average mod, the weaponry doesn't change it at all since for the most part besides a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ SMG you get and the M4 being extremely strong, there isn't anything new to play with. Completely fine for regular mods, but for something trying to give us a new experience it's eh. Though I must say the use of turrets in the later part of the mod is super annoying as you can be rounding a corner and get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ by two turrets you have no chance of fighting.

I think the narrative/story is lacking however. To be honest I don't even know what happened nor what the protagonist's goal was besides maybe escaping? Though that doesn't honestly fit the Black Ops very much at all though I get it's to limit the scope of the mod. However the intro sequence I think is poorly done, as it isn't explained what you have to do and the intro text itself has grammar errors. It's not really explained why your squad mates don't help you get the power back on, or what even happened to them.

I did find a security guard though who seemed to be bugged and stuck crouching, and when he got hit I was able to bring him along until the end. So that was pretty cool even though unintentional, because I don't know why a guard would assist the Black Ops of all people.

Overall I think the mod is decent. Certainly shows its age and I realize the HECU collective have gotten much better at modding, but it's definitely still worth a play if you want to bother going through the installation process. The gameplay is solid and it'll give a neat experience you won't find with most mods! Do play the updated version however though, it very easy to get working by following the instructions and you don't have to downgrade.
