Open Road
Kyle's Review of "Open Road" - 3/5
Good ideas and design, but it needs polish. 3/5 stars.

Open Road feels like a continuation of the official campaigns in terms of length and aesthetics, and I think sticking with what works is a major strength. It keeps the campaign from ever being frustrating, and it helps the moments that DO stray from tradition to really pop, like in the very beginning when players have to scrounge about looking for supplies before a horde can spawn. The level design also hits that sweet spot where locations are expansive and explorable without being maze-like, although the level of visual detail varies greatly from map to map.

The main thing this campaign is missing is polish, and it creates artificial difficulty. Survivor bots can struggle to pick up items, Crescendo Events will regularly start while you're walking with no warning or explanation, and the later maps feature Special Infected spawning in pairs of two for some reason.

This campaign flows well overall, so give it a try with friends.

The campaign is built the way that there are surprises and even 2 specials at the same time in map 4. It was supposed to be a "jockey forest" but it became clear in playtesting that having more than 2 would be too insane.

However i think it runs pretty good framerate wise, unlike many of the other custom campaigns. If i would be doing this today and not 10 years ago, i would propably build it with more skill and a bit different way.

Thanks for the review!
