When talking about balance please include the rates at which you are playing, as they can change the speed at which you gather materials. Faster gathering = more wood to chop down and there by more Wood Chips (Bark).

One of the main reasons to tame a named carpenter thrall is becasue they have the ability to turn logs into branches. You're taking a bit out of the game by giving that ability for free. Honestly if you took the logs step out it would gived named carpenters a REAL reason other than spikes. In my opinion it would make the mod feel more offical. Each other named crafting thrall has a defined purpose and it makes you REALLY want them. Carpenters are just lacking. If this development team is anything like Ark's i can see them adopting the mod as a part of the game if it didn't remove the need for named carpenter thralls.

@Mike Hawk -- Looking this up in the dev kit, will update the mod to keep the thralls useful. My intention was to allow end game players to not feel bottlenecked by the lack of bark at endgame. Thanks for the input I will look to balance around it.

Maybe reduce the amount of wood chips you get? Right now, it's very easy at the steel-tools level to get hundreds or even thousands of wood chips going even if I'm stripping the wood to branches to chips by hand. I love the extra chips, but it's making it far too easy to have thousands of tanned leathers and dried wood for only a few minutes' work right now.

Perhaps change the ratio so that 6 wood gives 4 branches and 4 branches gives 2 chips. I made those numbers on the spot, but basically make the ratio lower rather than higher when starting with wood. This way, you still get a lot of chips, especially when you can get 30-ish wood per tree or more, but not so much that it makes wood gathering mostly irrelevant.

Another suggestion could be to give users a slider to decide what the ratios are for their needs. I honestly wish I knew how to fiddle with the mod for my private server to do this myself but I'm mod-creating-illiterate.

I'm working on a multi-point overhaul of the mod, CE has a Vanilla recipe to split logs and get branches (tho it was limited to one specific tier 4 carpenter thrall). The overhaul will be lowering the amount of wood chips you get per log, I'm still trying to keep an additive ratio, but it might be more like a 5% increase instead of the 66% it is now.

I wish I had some idea of how to make this happen. Since I don't my aim is to balance the mod to vanilla settings and then on those 4x+ servers they have more wood to break down into more wood chips (in theroy 4x times as much.)
