F.A.Q: "Why doesn't my save game load?"
Because of the sub-optimal way the game is hardcoded, the risk of save crashes is probably never going to be eliminated entirely. It can be minimized, however, if you take certain precautions. We recommend that you follow "best practices" for saving with mods and this applies not just to Absolute Chaos but to any large scale mod for Empire at War.

BEST PRACTICES FOR SAVING WITH MODS:

1) NEVER save the game during tactical mode, either in space or on land. Saves made in this state are notoriously prone to break. ALWAYS save on the GC map, preferably when AI movements are at a lull.

2) NEVER save your game while the game is paused.

3) NEVER try to save the game on the GC map during a lag spike or while the game temporarily freezes. As suggested earlier, try to wait unit there is a lull in AI activity.

4) If you play for a long time without interruption, (2 hours or more) DO NOT continually overwrite the same save file over and over again. Instead, delete your old save file and write a new one in its place. Periodically exit the game via the main menu, even if you plan to simply restart the game and continue playing. This has the added benefit of improving performance, as the game often tends to gum-up and run slow during uninterrupted marathon sessions.

Additionally we recommend that you disable the autosave functionality. This can be done by finding the local folder where your save games are located. Right click on the save file that appears in the first slot or slot 0. Go to PROPERTIES -> ADVANCED. Select the option to set the file to "READ ONLY". This will prevent the game from generating autosaves.

If you wish to avoid the risk of save breaking updates, move the mod to your local folder and play there. You can then apply the updates at your discretion. Most updates will not break saves, however. Usually, a save only breaks if the update modifies the AI or the specific files used to generate GC scenarios.

To do this, find your steam workshop folder, and locate the mod. You can copy the mod folder and then paste it in COMMON -> SWEAW -> CORRUPTION -> MODS. You can then run the mod from that location without fear of losing save progress to an update.

We will always provide fair warning when we intend to introduce an update with save breaking potential. Check the changelog for details.
