Frequently-Asked Questions
As this mod has a lot of specific design-choices, I figured there will be a few questions on those:

Why are the Order and Chaos versions of each skills similar?
  • Picture buying a skillbook for a jump-spell in Order form. You then find out it is a heal in Chaos form after trying it out. Why? You bought a skillbook designed with the intention of allowing your character to move around the battlefield.
  • One mode could have a really good skill, and the other have a somewhat meh one instead.
  • Some skills like Bouncing Blade / Divergent Dagger - yes they are the same types, but they are this way so that both forms to an AoE bounce attack, same as the argument above.
Why Chaos damage?
  • There is no generic magic-damage type in the game, nor is it possible to add in via the Divinity Engine.
  • Using another damage type would divide the user into maxing-out that damage type by pumping points into it, or splitting point distribution which feels pretty bad.
  • Flavourful. I had considered Poison, but Umbra’s would really struggle against the undead.
Why scale off of weapon damage?
  • Mainly so that both stances do the same damage levels.
  • The dual-wielding stat is under-appreciated in my opinion, and the dodge increase is super good with the right build. Plus, the damage increase is VERY close to Warfare on these skills too!
Why does Chaos form give extra Chaos damage on hit?
  • Higher presence of magic armour in the game.
  • Also so Chaos form isn’t doing just Physical damage on basic-attack.
How did you come up with the Umbra class?
  • It started off as a stance-based Druid. Helaene released her Wyldfae class, which blew mine out of the water (hehe) - mad props to her though, if you haven’t played any of Helaenes classes you are severely missing out!
  • Subsequently, I started to work on a new class, one to bring a new set of ranged Necromancy skills - my Spectre class.
  • I came back to the Druid class as I liked my two-stance idea I had going on. One of the comments on my Spectre class asked for a “true assassin class”. There was a ‘eureka!’ moment - what about an assassin who isn’t forced to play physical damage only? And thus the Umbra was born.
  • Regarding the name of the class, I’d been playing a lot of Bayonetta on my Switch whilst designing my Spectre class, and I made a note that the Umbra witches would be a good inspiration point for a new class.
I don’t want to be switching forms - can I play without this feature?
  • Absolutely. Way of the Umbra is not required to use any of these skills, and is only required to transform them into their Order/Chaos counterparts.
  • Removing Way of the Umbra from memory doesn’t change the form of your skills, meaning if you want to use a Chaos-only version of this class, use Way of the Umbra to switch to Chaos form, remove it from memory, ????, profit.
Can you make an INT/STR override for this class?
  • I can, but I’m not in a rush to do so. This class has been specifically designed with FIN builds/playstyles in mind.
  • Should enough people demand a new variation, I can certainly make it for you peeps, but I’m not sure it will be any good to play without the core backstab mechanic in place. I can change this, but it will result in a class so far from my original vision it won’t actually be the Umbra anymore.
My normal Physical assassin does the job well already, why should I use the Umbra class?
  • There are many Umbra skills, in fact, there are twice as many than regular Scoundrel skills available! This brings more options to the player.
  • Generally speaking, most tanky enemies have high Physical armor, but low Magic armor. Mage enemies have the opposite. As the Umbra can switch between damage forms, they are effective at killing both enemy types - base-game assassins would struggle against tankier enemies.
