about 8 fleets of 40 escorts, 20 battle cruisers and one fallen titan all at your L-gate work as a fairly good defence, i had 12 by the end to have 4 to send to defend my other borders but they pretty much only attacked my L-gate, by the time ist forth to kill them i had 12 fleets of that comp with their offence and defence tech
Others cannot do anything to them atm (But may be added in the future)
Everything else besides their unique buildings, colossus, starbases and the Arkship's weapon (Which is unique to it) are researchable with the right conditions.
Doing so however constitutes you as the successor of OE, and the entire galaxy will react upon such sudden change in power.
Those who consider you allies or friends will approve of it, those that are not, especially AFE/AEs will consider you the new threat.
Cleasning will have to be both through and merciless.
