SAVTec SS Silver Dawn SLV-3R
cptsavarus  [developer] 21 Sep, 2018 @ 7:06am
Story mode initialised...
What's this all about then SAV? Whatchu doin mate?
The SS Silver Dawn marks the start of a special new project I've been putting together for some time now - An ongoing story told by way of workshop builds, scenarios, screenshots, artwork and of course the written word.

"Story mode" is completely optional - you don't have to pay any attention to it if you don't want to. You can just subscribe & play with the ships if that's all you want to do. No harm no foul. The story is for those who want something more out of their workshop experience - something to not only play with but to get you thinking & imagining - to inspire you to dream things & create things, and hopefully to go on to inspire others too.

"SLV-3R": a Spaceship story

SLV-3R will be told in chapters or "episodes" so as to make it fit for the workshop.
The story will have a cohesive "main theme" that'll be present throughout every episode but the episodes themselves will often deviate from it to explore new ideas & "mini-arcs"

Each new episode, whether it takes the form of a ship, a scenario, a mod, a screenshot or a piece of artwork will tell its own short story about a noteworthy event that happens on the Silver Dawns journey. Some events will pertain directly to the main story arc while others will feel more like distractions from it.

In canon terms, these episodes will be presented as data feeds from the Silver Dawn, with my workshop pages acting as a kind of "live cam / reality" website... something like the thing where you log on & watch Pandas at the zoo... except way more entertaining & without the sleeping, eating and Pandas.

My hope is to tell each new story in graphic novel format, as well as in a tangible way that you can load into your worlds & play with.
There may be encounters with the ships of other "races" and if your fleet is chosen to represent one, you may find one or more of your builds featuring in the Silver Dawns story arc (willing participants only - I wont link anything without permission)

What happens in this story?
The short answer is I don't know yet because it's not finished.
The story will write itself with every new thing I add to it. Maybe it'll end one day, maybe it'll go on forever. There's no knowing what'll become of the Silver Dawn or what adventures she'll have.

Can my ships participate in your story / Can I write an episode for it?
It's my hope that this project will inspire people to create their own fan-fiction, both for their own ships and mine, in whatever shape or form that fiction may take.
I therefore encourage everyone to get writing back-stories for their builds - and by all means, feel free to tie your stories in with mine.

If you create a short story & would like it considered as part of the Silver Dawn canon, send me a link to it and if it fits in with my vision of Silver Dawns' universe then I may adopt it as canon.

Not all submissions will make the final cut
Don't be offended or disheartened if your submission isn't adopted - it doesn't mean it's not good, just that I can't find a way for it to make sense alongside certain other stories.
You're still free to incorporate your story into your own version of canon - there's no harm whatsoever in having multiple parallel universes existing alongside one another. There may even turn out to be ways to merge parallel universes & alternate timelines... who knows what strange new technology Silver Dawn will discover in the future!

What classifies as a short story in this series?
Short stories can be anything you like. Doesn't have to be written. Maybe you have a screenshot that tells its own story - or just looks beautiful. Maybe you're an artist & have a piece of fan art to show off. Maybe you're even a YouTuber & want to do a short roleplay.
All material is good material!

Do it for the right reasons, not the wrong ones
If you submit something for consideration, please do it for the right reasons.
Wanting to tell a good story & entertain people is the right reason.
Having something excellent that you worked hard on for the community to enjoy is the right reason.
Just wanting an easy 5 minutes of fame on the back of someone elses work is the wrong reason.

I'll help drum up exposure for work of high quality, where it's demonstrated that the author put in some real effort.
What I wont do is showcase low quality token efforts to my subscribers just to give a leg-up to someone who hasn't even tried to earn it.
The community deserves the best content we can offer them. Only by giving it to them will they support us as content creators - so do it for the right reasons!

What about the rest of the SAVTec & EMGC fleets?
Fear not! The SAVTec and EMGC fleets will continue to expand as normal, separately to the story, albeit in a different part of the galaxy.
Think of the Silver Dawn stories as a single branch of the SAVTec universe.

Submitting an idea or a piece of work
Please submit all ideas / links to your work here in this thread. There will be many chanels for me to monitor with this project & it may become impossible for me to respond in detail to all of them. Having a one-stop thread for all material will help keep the project on track.

Anything you submit will of course remain yours and you will always get full credit for it. By submitting an idea or piece of work, all you're doing is giving me licence to create fictional links between my stories and yours.

What is the purpose of this story thing?
The purpose is entertainment, pure & simple. Entertainment for you, entertainment for me.
In creating these stories I'm entertaining myself. If you like them then I'm also entertaining you, which in itself is entertaining for me!
Now I don't know about you but I love to be told a good story - I love picturing it in my mind & imagining it's real. I love filling in the gaps with my imagination & figuring out the meaning behind it. I love that for just those few moments, the worries of the real world can f*&% off and I can immerse myself in one where anything is possible.
And that's it. If you're looking for some nefarious motive I'm afraid there isn't one. It's all just for fun!

Where can I find more episodes?
Your first stop for SLV-3R episodes should be here, in the SLV-3R collection...
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/workshop/filedetails/?id=1521760456

Be sure to check out the discussion pages for each new episode - there will be valuable lore in them that can't be fitted into the workshop descriptions.

Everything is hyper-linked together where appropriate, so navigating your way around from inside the story should be nice & easy.

I look forward to seeing all your work! Good luck and enjoy!

I love this idea! It's been really enjoyable to read descriptions on your builds, and SE is really good platform to tell stories and lore. If you like to add kind of interactable LCDs to your builds using MMasters script, take a look at my MCS-64 Hermes. The potential with such LCDs in a storytelling is quite neat.

Thanks Smokki! I really do put effort in on my descriptions, so it's nice to hear that they're appreciated!

I'll take a look at that script. I try to avoid publishing things with scripts already loaded into them, as I like to keep my builds 100% vanilla & let people choose scripts & mods for themselves.... but as far as the storytelling goes, it looks like a very useful tool. Also, the idea with the story is to try to incorporate workshop items by other authors so we can all share the exposure of our work, so if I can find a way to tie it in with the lore then I will.

My hope is to foster a new kind of comeraderie between content creators so that all our work can be part of the same "universe", even though it's all so different.

I love your workshop by the way! Your screenshots are amazing & your builds are really well thought out. Your Lore is compelling too. If you'd like your work to become part of the SLV-3R story I'm sure there's a place for it. :steamhappy:

If you find any of my builds usefull for the story, feel free to use them as you see fit :) That would be nice. I have quite nicely thought out lore for my stuff, but I'm not even close as good as you with the words. I really like the idea of sharing the exposure and universe, and I have some neat ideas, to showcase your builds among mine in the future, if that's ok for you :)
cptsavarus  [developer] 24 Sep, 2018 @ 11:01am
Thanks! I'll definitely find some way of adding your builds to the story. If you have any ideas for how you'd like them to feature please do let me know. The more ideas I can get the better!
It'd be particularly useful to know more about who your people are. Looks like they live on a desert world & specialise in building ground vehicles. Is that a major export industry for them?
Are they human or another race?
Do they live in the same system as my people or another system?
That sort of thing...

(My people come from a kind of "alternate timeline" Earth / Sol where 2077 is about 200 years more advanced than real life tech. We've mostly colonised the Sol system but are only just starting to send manned missions to other systems.)

And yes, by all means feel free to insert my builds in your own lore / universe if you like. If everyone who gets involved creates their own little bits of fiction that fit their view of the universe then we'll get a story being told from lots of different perspectives & it'll start to feel like a living, breathing universe.
Smokki  [developer] 25 Sep, 2018 @ 12:46pm
We have actually quite similar settings. In my universe, the year is 2077. Colonization of the solar system began around 2020 and colonization of other nearby star systems has been possible for around 15 years.

Argonaut Industries is Mars based corporation, specializing in civilian colonization solutions including: A) buildings (large scale industrial facilities, colony habitats and space stations), B) ground vehicles and C) small selection of space ships. Argonaut Industries has also established numerous colonies in and outside of the solar system ranging from mining colonies to industrial sites to remote research facilities.

Argonaut Industries is composed of three separate divisions:

A) Argonaut Engineering Division (AED) is the meat of the corporation. Research and development of all buildings, vehicles and ships as well as construction and maintenance of colonies is the responsibility of AED.

B) Argonaut Research Division (ARD) is the nervous system of the corporation and operates unknown number of research facilities in and outside of the solar system, stydying such fields as xenobiology, archeology and artificial intelligence.

C) Argonaut Security Division (ASD) was formed as an exoskeleton on top of the corporation in order to better protect it's growing interests against threats both external and internal.

I see many possibilities how you could use my faction. Maybe in your universe Argonaut Industries is just starting the colonization of other systems with chances of bumping into Silver Dawn. Or maybe Argonaut Industries is antagonistic force for Silver Dawn for some reason. Etc.
cptsavarus  [developer] 25 Sep, 2018 @ 3:20pm
Sounds like you've put quite a bit of thought into your lore. That gives me an excellent mental picture of the universe from Argonaut's perspective. I love it!

I think from SAVTec's point of view, Argonaut would be not so much a rival corporation as an amicable neighbour & bit of friendly competition... Someone they'd worked alongside in the past - maybe on separate parts of the same contracts.
Could be they trade or manufacture components for one another - or maybe they even franchise their designs out to one another when orders are high. They'd almost certainly buy each others vehicles, if only to reverse engineer them or improve the design & sell it back!
Being only the next planet over I don't think they'd be like warring factions or anything. The way I see it, the solar system is mostly unified & at peace (apart from the pirates of course!).

As for how Argonaught might fit in with the story... in Silver Dawns' time there's been no real exploration outside of Sol yet - she's the first major manned mission outside the system.
But I have a plan - I think! I might have several in fact!

The easy way to merge our two timelines would be to create an episode from a joint SAVTec / Argonaught perspective looking back 15 years into the past to around the time Silver Dawn was launched - or shortly after... say on the aniversary of... a certain event (not to give away any spoilers just yet!)
It shouldn't matter that we'd be winding back to 2062-ish, as Silver Dawns' timeline is deliberately made a bit vague & flexible so it can fit around other peoples timelines.

The other way would be when the Silver Dawns story splits into 2 arcs (this is something I'll be doing anyway). One arc will follow the Silver Dawn after she makes "a certain discovery" and the other will return to Sol, where a second mission is being launched in light of the discovery.
Argonaught could conceivably be part of that second mission.
Not entirely sure what the mission will need yet but I can think of ways for it to spotlight most, if not all of your workshop builds.

Nothing to say we cant do both of course!
If Argonaught was part of the second mission it'd lead up nicely to an episode of looking back in time. Could be a great excuse to list all the things that've been showcased so far in the story - maybe write some short editorials from the designers perspectives or something.

Food for thought anyway.
Smokki  [developer] 25 Sep, 2018 @ 11:29pm
I like that idea a lot :) Considering how your vehicles gave me the inspiration to start creating my own workshop content and lore, our factions working together or at least coming along seems fitting. And feel free to take any creative freedoms you like, that's just the general idea of my faction.

In the future, I'll be probably releasing mostly different buildings as I have dozens of them under work.

Excellent! Then we have a plan!

I'll probably ask for any specific info I need rather than make things up myself - better that the lore of your work comes from you where possible. I don't like to assume things if I can help it. Plus it'll keep you on your toes! Hehe!

Buildings are somethng I have a serious lack of, so there'll be a huge vaccum there for you to fill!
I really want to start doing some proper graphical storyboards for screenshots at some point & it'll be great to have some ground-based set-pieces for them.

I'm honoured that my builds helped to inspire some of yours. Your work is some of the best quality I've seen!
That's the main reason I build for the workshop too - to give people ideas & encourage their maginations. Very gratifying to hear that it's having a positive effect on people! :steamhappy:

I'm planning to release my Asteroid Base[i.redd.it] in a week or two and I thought I'll add a bit of story into it. Would you like to have Silver Dawn or another of your ships docked in there (in a screenshot)?

Hell yes please!
Is that a remake of the vanilla Easy Start Green base?
Looks amazing!
And you beat me to it! My EMGC version is still very much WIP & looks nowhere near as good as that!
Gorgeous screenshot too! Shame that KSH screenshot competition isn't still open - reckon you would've won a prize for sure!
Looking forward to seeing this one on the workshop! Excellent job!

If you give me a bit of info on your backstory I'll fit it in with SLV-3R & post some links up for you in an appropriate place.
Mostly need to know where SLV-3R would encounter your station.
In Sol or another system?
Smokki  [developer] 5 Oct, 2018 @ 12:56am
Indeed, I though it could use a small facelift as the interiors are a bit bland these days. I'm sure the EMGC version would better serve in it's intended role as I went a bit wild with this, having double the PCU and block count of the original.

Well I won quite a lot of skin sets from the latest screenshot competition, so no complaing from me :P

Quick lore:

Multiple asteroid bases like these were constructed in the Sol system by Argonaut Industries during the intial "gold rush period" to exploit asteroid fields, working as refinery and as a base of operations for mining crews. After nearby asteroids were depleted and mobile refinery base ships started to become the standard of space mining, many of these bases were abandoned, sold or repurposed.

Few of them, like refinery 07 near Mars, still function in it's original role, though mining crews have been outsourced to private contractors, who come in and sell their ore for processing.

Yeah, the EMGC version will mostly be a functionality update & re-balance. I'm dolling it up a bit as well but since the vanilla station isn't exactly performance friendly for me I don't want to go overboard, as I want the EMGC stuff to be playable on lower-end hardware.
It certainly wont be as good looking as yours.

Congrats on the screenshots contest! If your submissions were of this higfh quality it's no wonder you netted some goodies!

Thanks for the lore. Nice! Didn't know if you were calling this one an Argonaut build or something else.
My plan is to release one more build to tell the story of SLV-3R leaving the system (and the various things she passes on the way), then on to the main plot for a few episodes.
I'm hoping to be able to showcase several builds in one go with the next episode. Being only 1 planet over, your Refinery 07 would be a perfect first stop. Maybe SLV-3R would be taking on Uranium fuel there.
Still got quite a bit of work to do before it's ready but I'll hold off publishing til you're ready with yours, then it can feature as a main component straight away without any re-writing.
