What about adding the "DefenseShield" Mod to the roster?
On my server, like A LOT of ppl, we use the Defense shield mod, is there any chance to add it to the list of "weapons" and make it spawn on enemy ships? to work it will need to spawn the "shield emitter" and "the control block".

The shield emitter must be on the outside of the ship, the control block can be anywere.
I know is not a weapon, but considering that it will literally make some ship REALLY hard to take, one or 2 weapon slot can be lost on some ships... (unles those ships only have 2 weapos.. in that case it can be a problem...)

Or the shield emitter can take the place of the weapon (it take only 1x1) and the controller can take the place of a random armor block, it take 1x2 in small ships and 1x1 in big ships...

Don't know if it is this mod or another but I just encountered my first NPC that actually had a shield.

never happend to me... if is the case it will be even cooler than i tought... will be useful a confirm from the mod author :P

That's not from this mod directly. I think its another NPC mod that uses a feature of the Modular Encounters Spawner to read what mods you're running and then active special spawn groups in response.

Might be More Encounters 3.0, but I can't say for sure - hard to tell what the ship is..
