Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2

Dark Carnival: Remix
My Two Cents: 8/10
This is a fantastic-looking campaign.

This is basically a Left 4 Dead 2: Remastered campaign. It's expansive, the map layout is sensible world-wise and feels like an actual carnival. And the concert was gorgeous. I really like the variety of what you do throughout the level, it's not just killing and progressing.

I like how now there are tasks you need to complete in order to catch the helicopter pilot's attention. I'm not sure if it's a requirement to reach the end, but it's cool nonetheless. The way the helicopter looks at you while fighting the tank made me smile. Back to the roller-coaster, I really loved the small room where you can take a breather, wish the official campaign had it.

My major complaint is that it can be very difficult to navigate. The roller-coaster is especially egregious in this regard. I completely missed the button I needed to press. Everything apart from the finale isn't very fun to traverse. The navigation isn't atrocious, but unlike the official campaign, it doesn't feel as if it naturally leads you through it.

Many reviews and comments have stated that the finale is too overwhelming. I have the opposite problem. I found it very empty and unchallenging. That could be because I was playing on advanced, but very few commons appeared, and only one Boomer. Even when the commons did clump together, some side-stepping and a shotgun put them down with ease.

Which leads me to my final complaint: the maps don't complement the infected very well. The openness, combined with the size, allows the survivors to pick them off from a distance. The Tank wasn't even a threat. As long as you don't get under his armpits and keep running, you'll live. Barely any commons to get in the way, and if it's on fire, you can just keep progressing through the level. Don't bother with it. Specials seem to work fine.

Overall, considering my major complaint is mostly solved by more playthroughs, you could say there are only two big problems with Remix: it's finale (whether you consider it too much or too little) and how the infected are basically shambling mannequins who like to hit. If you take the beauty and variety of Remix, refine it, and mix it with the gameplay of Vanilla, you will create the perfect L4D campaign.

I give it an 8/10, very nice.
