I had originally implemented the Support Pod to do that. I had hinged and piston'd snorkels with pumps that would automatically deploy when the pod reached the surface. One for Air (INPUT) and one for Exhaust (and alternately water from Bilge Pumps, OUTPUT). It worked great in theory but in practicality not so much. The maximum length for a winch that can also handles fluids is 16 m. The 100 m Large Winch is incorrectly labelled as being able to handle fluids but it doesn't.
That 16 m distance isn't really much of a viable working distance when you factor in some slack length required for the Support Pod to work properly (factoring up and down movement of the waves, etc). Additionally as you approach the surface the physics appear to change slightly. If a winch, etc. does come along with a much longer distance than I'm very interested in reinstating the original design. Until then the Support Pod is more of a POC (Proof of Concept) gimic waiting for a larger purpose). :)
And, I have a lot of POC's (Literally, to tjhe point where I have an entire colelction for them (They are all for space engineers, for now...)
And, i'm assuming that the engines can't use air from an airtight room? (I.E. Putting the air intake in a large room inside the sub?
I did at one time have air intake vents for the Diesels that were inside the ENGINE Compartment. When I was on the surface I had the snorkles pull air in with a pump and had a one way filter to try and "catch" as much air in the compartment... in theory The Engine appeared to run for a small bit of time with the contained air but since it was so packed in the compartment there really wasn't a heck of lot of it. The engines would eventually loss efficiency and then sputter out with very little effect on the battery charge. At that point I opted to pull the space used for trying to collect air and threw in another Large Battery.
