This way you could leave the tools on dedicated shelves next to the workbenches and then the colonists would equip it, when starting to craft something.

Or Simple Sidearms could be used https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=927155256 to automatically switch the between tool and weapon.
