Shields?

Apologies if I am missing something, but how do I get my pawns to equip both a shield and a 1handed weapon? I've got a kite shield and a gladius, but my pawns won't use both at once.

Must be too late but for someone else who got really confused on this matter like me
1. Choose a pawn.
2. Right click on the shield.
3. Equip shield as a shield.
