Starting with Negative reputation?
just added this mod, and ASSERT is at -1000 reputation, with no interaction from me, which makes them attack on sight, which is contrary to what the mod page says "they'll leave you alone, but will be there if you want a fight" (paraphrasing)

Most of these MES modules are supposed to leave you alone, unless you get into their "personal space", then their base negative starting rep will cause them to "defend themselves". And only actively hunt you, even when you are home minding your own business, after you stacked quite a lot of negative reputation with them.

But the randomness and complexity of the sandbox variables can put a spawn right next to your base and agro you the moment you first install and login this mod. Happened to me just today...

Yeah, that's killing enjoyment of this addon for my group too. Maybe there's config options to change how this works, but it's not easily understood, and clearly not the default.
