Personally, I'm a fan of turrets where the rotating structure fills the largest possible amount of the volume of it's placement box, with the cannon barrels extending out of this zone, like modern tank turrets for example. This makes densely clustered citadel armaments easier to make. The X3 is a good example of this concept, hence my preference listed above. This would be particularly desired for energy weapon turrets.
IMHO, the complete MWI lineup should consist of conventional ballistic, rail/coil guns, lasers, a "blaster" type, projectile energy weapon type, a form of disabling energy weapon and the range of missiles. So far, all of these (minus the disabling weapon) exist in some form or another, and there are other mods that give excellent examples of each system as well.
Northwind's railguns compliment MWI very well, but as they are a separate mod, have a different design language.
MA weapons also compliment MWI well, with the almost similar design language of the blister and meatball to the Telion AA
MA also have the most "realistic" take on laser weapons, and the Gladius is an excellent example of the under the hood workings of a heavier turret.
2cm's laser and ion beam systems are probably the best looking and sounding beam effects in circulation at the moment, but have an entirely different mechanism of action and aesthetic language to basically anything out there.
I'd love to see MWI draw inspiration from these other mods, to build an all-in-one set of weapon systems.
MWI part 2 has a really cool design language for it's weapon systems, with distinct barrel designs for beam and pulse lasers, as well as a single example of a blaster with it's own barrel aesthetic.
IMHO this pulse/bolt/plasma type weapon should be a hybrid of energy and ballistic, and perhaps draw hydrogen as ammo. I'd love to see an entire plasma weapon family, with large grid options, maybe hybrid railguns/particle cannons, as well as true small grid lasers.
The current fixed laser does not share design language with any of the other laser systems, so admittedly I'd like to see this changed, with beam and pulse fixed lasers.
Similarly, the point defence laser, while cool, does not fit particularly well with the rest of the set, and could maybe be improved upon by redesigning it to be similar to the Telion AA, with an armoured sphere, with a central slot and the cool "eye" lens visible within.
The light and sound design of the lasers feels a bit weak compared to other energy weapon packs, and could do with a bit punchier sound and brighter, more bloom-y laser beams. The ability to set beam colour would be cool too. As an aside, my thoughts are that for beam lasers, there is no need to go multi-barrelled, when a single bigger beam would feel more powerful.
In fact, another take on this whole pack would be to do lasers as having no extended barrel at all, just a laser lens in the turret armour, and reserve the barrelled designs for plasma/particle/blaster type weapons.
As for missiles, those are already really good, with only possible inclusions I might add being "mines", basically slow, ion thrust missiles that can avoid point defense detection, at least until really close, flares that act similar to decoys, as you've already stated are on the way, and heavy torpedoes, by which i mean both a single shot torpedo mount for small grids, and really big ICBM launchers for the most Capital of ships.
Anyways, that's my rambling nonsense done.
