Roman Socii auxilia discussion
OK, post here to discuss the Socii Auxilia availability.

Personally, I think it is a valid concern that the Socii get delayed by the delay in Auxilia Camp II -- this is of course due to the fact that CA grouped all the Auxilia together. Now there are several ways to skin this cat, but I am fond of the following approach at the moment:

Specifically, this is reference to the availability of the following units...

Socii Equites
Socii Equites Extraordinarii
Socii Extraordinarii
Socii Hastati

----------

Currently these are restricted to the Auxilia Camps, which of course groups them together with the barbarians units, which were not recruited by the Romans until much later.

So, my idea is this:

Socii weren't *technically* considered as true auxilia, these were instead Roman allies. It makes sense that the solution to the problem (their recruitment being restricted to the availability of barbarian type auxilia units), is to split them away from the auxilia buildings. In otherwords, instead of the Socii being recruited by Auxillary Camp II, III, IV, they instead become recruited by the regular barracks, starting with Main I, II, III, IV (but Socii Equites would be restricted to Main II, along with the ordinary equites, for the sake of consistency).

The trick here is that the Socii Extaordinarii must be limited in number, otherwise the Romans would just recruit these units instead of Hastati. So, to address that, Socii Extraordinarii units would be limited to 8 (being elite units).

This would essentially allow the recruitment of all Socii infantry immediately, which was historical, and only the true auxilia would be delayed by the Auxilia Camp II. Also, the good thing about this is that it removes the need for the Romans to build an auxilia camp in Italia, which doesn't really make a lot of sense (they need to build barracks and training buildings).

Actually, I made these changes and ran some tests. I was surprised at how well it worked -- it creates a more historical situation and it helps the AI maintain a foothold early on. A nice a improvement I think. Plus I went ahead and spent some time doing what I wanted to do: limit the quantity of the most elite units in the campaign.

I have updated the mod with these changes. Feel free to leave any suggestions/feedback about the Socii change here.

I think your solution to the problem should work just fine from a player and AI point of view and I appreciate your prompt response to this concern. I'll give this mod another go when I get a chance.
Yeah great idea. I am having a little trouble though finding "socii extrordinary equite". I can get "socii extraordinary" and "socii hastati" from the "field of mars" in Italia or Cosica or Magna Graecia. But If I upgrade to Manipula barracks or Auxilary camp I don't have the option of recruiting "socci extrordinary equite" also when I upgrade from field of mars to manipula baracks I lose option of recruiting any socii units.

Good catch! I fixed that in an update just now, there was a typo preventing Socii units from being recruited past Field of Mars barracks improvements. Now you can recruit the Socii units in auxillary barracks chain (infantry) and in either heavy or auxillary chain (cavalry).

Thanks Volcano. I love having the socii from the start. Tech follows much more histoically now. Good job!
