Strange happenings with school student calculations
Continuing discussion with MuChWoW from main page:

@algernon just did it, and no luck there for me. Another thing I want to point out about the multiplier in this save file is that when I decrease the multiplier and the realistic school student capacity is enabled, the mutliplier works fine. The capacity just decrease like it's expected to. But when I the disabled realistic school student capacity and decrease/increase the multiplier, it just keep multiplying the capacity. So if the multiplier starts at 2x and the checkbox is disabled, decreasing the mutiplier to 1x multiply the capacity by 2. Increasing it back to 2x multiplies it by 2 again. So it just keeps multiplying.

Moving this discussion here as it seems to be a unique or very rare issue (no other reports, can't reproduce, testers haven't encountered it).

That is completely bizarre. What happens when you remove the file 'RealisticPopulation.xml' from your local settings directory and load your save again?

I'm having very strange issues with school calculations. Whatever combination of settings I use (disable/enable school calculations, set different multipliers, restart, etc), I can't seem to get the default/base game school capacities. I currently have them approximately double what they should be, and I have left it at that.

That would be OK, except that I have just discovered that the schools seem to have hardly any students. In a city of c. 47k inhabitants, there are only 10 elementary school students (this Information from the individual school building panels) - they are all located in one school. Similar things are happening with my high schools.

I have no idea what's going on!

Okay, the numbers of actual students have nothing to do with this mod, but student capacities certainly can be.

Are you using Customize It?

OK - thanks. No, I'm not using Customise It.

Okay, please post your output log and I'll take a look.

Alright, thanks for that!

A quick test to run:
- Ensure that 'Custom school calculations' is disabled, and quit the game.
- Load your save, and place a new elementary school.
- What value is it showing?

Many thanks!

- The new elementary school shows a capacity of 605. This is the European Elementary School.

I forgot to mention before that the 'standard' elementary school is not working as a school - any of these placed on the map behave as high-density residential (but with 0 household capacity).

I'm beginning to think I have problems with other mods as there is other strange stuff going on.

Thanks again for your help.

No worries -- happy to help out!

Alright, I suspect that what's happened with the vanilla elementary school is that ytou've accidentally applied RICO settings to it - easy enough to fix, see the Ploppable RICO Revisited FAQ[github.com].

605 is a strangely specific amount - I'm struggling to work out how that could be calculated. I might need to add some extra logging to see what's going on - I'll get back to you on that.

Okay, I've updated the testing version with some extra logging for school data. Can you please:
- unsubscribe from the main version
- subscribe to the testing version
- enable the testing version in your content manager
- load your game again
- and post the new output log?

OK - thanks.

Here's the log file:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/b623hccm5er3bik/Player.log?dl=0

(same place as before, but I have updated it).

I have removed the RICO settings as you suggested, and the standard elementary school is now working as a school.

Some other observations:

- I started a new city to see if the problem manifested itself from a 'clean slate'. In this case, the school capacities were normal and seemed to behave correctly.

However, in my current 'big' city, there are other strange things going on:

For the 'standard' elementary school:

- If I open the Realistic Population panel, it shows a tick in the second column (non-default calculation pack/custom multiplier)
- The population density is set to Vanilla.
- There are no custom settings for this asset.
- If I click the "save and apply" button, the capacity of the school jumps from 605 to 1220. If I click it again, it goes to 2459. Subsequent clicks take it to 4959 and 10000.
- Restarting the game takes it back to 605.

For the European elementary school:

- The pop density is "Suburban School" with "Commerical (default)" floors
- Again, the starting capacity is 605. If I click "Save and Apply" repeatedly, it rises to 1220, 2459, 4959 and 10000.
- Restarting returns the capacity to 605.

I have checked and this does not happen in my small test city.

I did a bit more digging in my saved games to find out when problems started.

The strange school capacities started appearing on 2nd Feb. The collapse in student numbers started on 21st Feb - this coincided with the release of Realistic Population 2.0.0.2, though of course this might be coincidental.

- Save 33 (21/2/22, 11:10 UTC) had a population of c. 45,600 and c. 12,000 students.
- Save 34 (21/2/22, 12:08 UTC) had a population of c. 47,700 and c. 2,600 students

If I load up save 33 and run it forward again, student numbers collapse again.

Could this be due to a bug in Lifecycle Revisited that interacts somehow with Realistic Population?

I have also confirmed that the education budget is set to 100% and custom school capacity calculations and multipliers are turned off.
algernon  [developer] 27 Feb, 2022 @ 4:02am
Unlikely that Lifecycle Revisited would cause that, but let's see - can you share save 33 on the workshop and put the link here?

I've just updated the testing version again with some changes to the school calculations code that forces updates over any other mod that might change the figures. Could you please test again with this update and see if the school numbers are now behaving themselves?
i.c.rutt 27 Feb, 2022 @ 8:14am
OK - thanks.

The new version of the mod gives capacities of 426 (base game elementary school) and 1420 (base game high school). The "Save and Apply" button no longer increases the capacity in the way described earlier.

Here's the save: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2767480221

Thanks!
