A Hat in Time

A Hat in Time

Functional Shield's Mod
godzilla540  [developer] 7 Sep, 2020 @ 2:03pm
To-Do List
Here a list of features that are planned for this mod!

1. Add 100% flair support for anyone who wants to make shield flairs. For not only basic flairs, but also give other modders the ability to add their own custom effects as well. As of now, I found that making the flair system is either more complicated then I thought, or I am over looking something simple.

2. Add a third slot called "special" shields. These are meant to be more offensive shields, such as a melee specific shield or a projectile based shield. Or, make it a different mod all together.

3. A parry mechanic, because why not!

4. A stamina system? I know that this game is not Dark Souls, but it is on the table for the future.

-Update-

5. Online functionality: I thought that I coded it right to begin with, but turns out that it did not work. But, since I like to focus on the offline aspect more then online party, its low on my priority list. - Finished and good enough for now

-Update 10/3/2020-

1 - After looking high and low for anyway to make flair support for this mod... It seems like its somewhat possible to do it, or at least better chances then my last few attempts at it. Many trial and errors later, I found a way to get a external random flair I made to be supported with this mod. The issue is that it does not show in the inventory. But, it is listed to have been auto-given via the mod tools. And even given it to myself via console commands and the modding tools. So I'm now at the step of actually getting it to show up in the inventory, and praying, that all of it works still.

- update 5/19/2024 - (yeah I know quite a while)

1. Flair support will not be added, but asset replacement can 100% be done.

2. "Attacking shields" are now included as of 5/18/2024.

3. A parry mechanic was made in the development, in the form of a buckler shield that was planned to be in the big overhaul update. Meant to be medium shields and able to parry and only able to block one attack before losing guard. However, I ended up ditching the idea. Since, even with the best possible (or more generous timings) parry frames that could have been made for the mod. It made me think that a parry mechanic that was more dark souls / Elden Ring inspired for a game like A Hat in Time doesn't really make sense. Since it goes to the question "Why would I want to parry when I can just air attack the enemy instead?". The parry was made to do a lot of counter damage and cause the enemy to be stunned greatly, but playing with it made me feel that going forward with it would go to the point of being to broken or where most people wouldn't bother using it.

Also, since A Hat in time is not a heavy action 3d platformer, some enemies (and many mod enemies) the parry wouldn't work on enemies that would make sense that could have been parried. After a while, it got tedious and to the point that I thought it wasn't worth investing all the time in the world into and further delaying the shield overhaul for something I wasn't really feeling it would gel well as a true parry option that was inspired by the parry mechanics from Dark souls / Elden Ring.

MAYBE it could return one day, but as of now, the parry idea of shields (in this mod) is shelved.

4. Stamina like system added as of 5/18/2024

-- No further updates will be made to this log. Thank you! --

Why are so many?!? Can you add a config to this, so I can disable the shields I don't want to use.

EDIT: I just found out out that there're only two shields, and the rest are just fairs for them.Thank goodness.

Yeah, 10 flairs overall if you count both shields. I wanted to bring some variety from the start. Maybe I went a little bit overboard with the flairs lol. But I am happy with those flairs I did decide to include in this mod.

Parry mechanic would be neat, I was really looking forward for a "perfect parry" mechanic where your next hit would deal more damage if the block was made just before you would get hit.
