[WOTC] Iridar's Five Tier Weapon Overhaul - Vanilla Balance
Coilgun Tier Override Mod Development: Would it be okay?
The Gist
I'm attempting to learn X2 Modding and INI modding to make Coilguns the top tier in this overhaul; and I'll most likely upload it to the workshop. I need some help though as this is not only my first modding experience X2 Wise, but also because aside from what I know both on my own experience toying with the idea and in the Making Coilguns top tier? discussion (by the way, kudos to ProfBadger for figuring out the quick n' dirty research solution), I'm basically flying blind in terms of INI tweaks in other INI mods and need a better understanding of the code that makes up the total overhaul.

That being said, I'm willing to learn! For me it makes more sense thematically and gameplay wise that COIL weapons are the highest tier; with Shen making a comment when browsing the Avenger of wanting to make things that are both a combination of the aliens tech but also something new. Gist is, I'm new to modding and I need some help learning. Also Iridar I do need your permission if I can make a mod like this assuming I get all the knowledge and information I need to actually do this.

Ideas and features
So aside from the obvious swap of Coil-Weapons taking top stage, I do also want to make it easier to swap weapon tiers/perform weapon tweaks at one's own discretion. Again, maybe it's overambitious to assume that I can not only learn, but implement this; but I do want to add support for Mod Config Manager so that there's no more need to go into the INIs, and you can do it in game (provided you're not in the middle of a campaign already).

Speaking of weapon tweaks, I have also thought about a weapon tweak I'd personally add by default. With each tier, you get an additional attachment to your weapon (with the max at 5). I'm not sure if that makes sense for vanilla balancing but it also is a good example of what the idea of MCM integration could look like. A good model for what I mean is through the "Total ADVENT Weaponry mod".

So yeah! Let me know what you think- Good directions to INI tweak tutorials and stuff; and hopefully Iridar would also let me know if it's okay for me to make a mod like this. I think it's a cool idea!

Yes, of course, as the description says, you're welcome to use this mod as a template to create your own weapon teir overhaul with any tier order you like.

Changing the order of tiers through in-game configuration is indeed very ambitious. While I myself made huge progress in learning how to create elaborate Mod Config Menu support, and have years of experience making xcom 2 mods, I still wouldn't count myself as capable of making a mod that allows to reliably, easily and comprehensibly reorder tiers through MCM.

If you just want to achieve "exact same as this mod, but with coil as final tier", then it's actually really easy.

This entire mod is made out of configuration for another mod, Template Master.

So you can simply make a mod that will contain a different set of configuration commands to order tiers in some other way.

Alternatively, you could make a mod that will serve as a plugin to my Five Tier Weapon Overhaul, which would contain configuration that will instruct Template Master to cosmetically swap specific tiers, like Beam with Coil or whatever.

Either way, this is not a convenient place to discuss this, I suggest you come to xcom 2 modmaking discord, and you can catch me there and get help from others as well.

For sure! My main priority is indeed making coilguns the top tier of weaponry both cosmetically and stats wise (meaning it still uses the same vanilla balance that you set up); using this mod as a base (since I'd assume it's actually much more tedious to do it from Template Master (and from scratch)).

I definitely joined the discord though and I'd love to talk with you more about it!
