the storage system and everything involved with it is just stars. does anyone know how to fix this

If you're referring to the text, then either the font didn't load correctly or the game thinks you're using an unsupported language.
Try resetting your game settings by deleting the config.json file in your tModLoader saves directory at Documents/My Games/Terraria/tModLoader/.
