Waste Tyrants: Creature Mod

Thoughts on overpopulation issues.
(I don't own this game on Steam so I can't make a comment, but for whatever reason I can post a discussion thread.)


Tyrants may be overly abundant as a result of nests spawning multiple groups. If a nest appears in a region, it becomes overrun with 3+ tyrant squads at once, which would explain the inconsistency of reports you've received (players with no local nest see only the appropriately rare homeless spawns). Basically nests are mainly useful for abundant creatures — note how leviathans don't have any.

In particular, the spawn chance for a particular type of nest is relative to the other nest types in the list; in a couple of areas tyrant nests are the only nest type which can spawn, making every possible nest in those regions tyrant ones. Most regions permit 4-6 nests... so you can see where the logical conclusion of that is going!

It might be best to make tyrants appear as homeless spawns only, but I still think having nests in a few dark corners of the map would be desirable for some endgame monster hunting.


Also, possible oversight: the western tyrant drops 6 of each of its items, but the eastern tyrant drops only 5 meat and skin along with 6 of everything else. Apologies if everything I've covered here is already known to you, but I hope it helps.

i like this thinking - it would be better to have nests be extremely rare, along with the juveniles, and to have random Tyrants across their areas, than for this awesome mod to die!

Yeah. In my own copy of the mod I restricted the nests to a few areas (eg. Crater, Gut, Unwanted Zone) but made homeless spawns appear in almost all zones with a relative chance of 1, so waste tyrant encounters are akin to deviljho appearances in the Monster Hunter games.

Speaking of Monster Hunter, could we also get tyrant egg loot in their nests for fun & profit? It would go nicely with making the nests rarer to have massive 30kg eggs with 40k value (example numbers).

This was indeed the issue. I removed all the nests except the western tyrant nest in the leviathan coast, and in all the zones that used to have nests I replaced them with homeless spawns if they didn't already have them. Then I added eastern tyrant nests to howlers maze and gut. Now the mods balance feels perfect to me. You run into homeless spawns occasionally, mostly in the games dangerous coastal areas, and then the nests for each are restricted to specific dangerous areas where you can find them in large numbers + juveniles. Thanks for the tip Mill.

The only time I get issues like this is when I adjust the sliders on the game options for global size and squad size multipliers.

Wonder if they're also experiencing it because they did the same thing I did.

Tbh that's probably the issue combined with what Mill pointed out that the tyrants nests are being assigned to a couple zones that don't have nests (spider plains and stormgap coast), which is causing the zone to max out its nest limit with tyrants. I also noticed that the nest population limit of eastern tyrants is set to 20, which is twice that of the western tyrant nest population limit. I'm not sure if that was intended by LordHapless, but it can lead to the eastern tyrant population getting quite large. Especially in the stormgap coast the game will always spawn 6 east tyrant nests and so you potentially end up with 120 eastern tyrants in that zone.

I deleted my personal patch and remade it based off that and it seemed to "fix" the issue. I just removed the nest spawns in spider plains and stormgap coast and then added an eastern tyrant pack homeless spawn to stormgap coast to replace the nest. And then because I wanted tyrants to be rare even with jacked up population settings, I reduced the tyrant nest population limit and set the tyrant squads "don't multiply" value to true so they aren't affected by the squad multiplier setting.

I think I found some of what is causing issues.

In the "town" items the fiends and tyrants are the same faction, so if the "resident override" is set to false then after spawning what is assigned to the "town" it fills the rest of the population with tyrants or fiends, even if its a fiend nest (which have higher population numbers). If I'm wrong about this let me know, I am inexperienced in modding kenshi.

Another issue is between the 2 mods multiple squads, towns, etc have the same string id. If you only have one of the mods its fine, but if you have both then tyrant squads can spawn in fiend nests (maybe even roaming squads). This I found when I made a mod to edit the 2 at the same time (mostly the biome spawns), I had fiend nests with tyrant squads because the original fiend squads were deleted from the game for having the same name.

So I'm going to try renaming some things and hope nothing breaks.

I'm also doing what some of y'all are and lowering tyrant squad sizes and nest population as well as making them not affected by squad size multiplier.

Could you perhaps post a patch for that? I'm tempted to see the Tyrants in action, but I've been hesitant to do so based on the comments.

I adjusted some things in both mods so I can't just upload the changes I did. But I can probably make a patch that just fixes the spawns.
