1. The heightmap conversion results in terracing where the contour lines are all in clumps on what ought to be smooth slopes, and many countour lines conform to the F1 grid instead of being curves. I fixed both these issues by quickly hitting everything with a low-strength terrain editor smoothing brush before building, but it would be great if it came pre-smoothed.
2. The terraces coupled with rock autogeneration puts little invisible rocks all over the map which make farming a pain. I delete them with the terrain editor, but my recommendation would be to smooth the map first and then run the rock autogenerator so that rocks only get generated on parts of the map that are supposed to be steep, instead of also on every little square terrace because of the granularity from the heightmap.
3. This isn't a real complaint, but I think the Sentinel Gap would have been fun geography to work with and it is maddening to see it just a few meters across the map edge so I can't build a railroad through it.
Thanks.
1. I'll try out some more smoothing next time I make a map. In the past I have avoided it because I felt like I was doing more harm than good.
2. The invisible rock part does sound pretty annoying, and I definitely didn't intend for that. I might have set the rock slope threshold a little low, with that being an unintended consequence.
3. At the time of making this map, I was using data from the USGS website that comes in 1 degree grid squares. The squares don't usually mix nicely (different black and white points, contrast, etc). Since I made this map, I found a new website that is much easier to get maps centered on an exact location. I'll definitely consider doing a a 'revisit' map of this area and incorporate your feedback.
Thanks for taking the time to comment on this map.
