How To Edit A Counter Strike Weapon Skin To Work With This Mod
Before we begin yes this CAN be done with Steam Workshop addons. They are just a little harder to find once installed. Mods from Gamemaps.com are much simpler however, so if you can find the same mod there, it will save you time to download it from there instead of the workshop.

ALSO: This guide assumes you are using Windows, but most of the steps will be the same for most OSs, only the process of finding your way around will be different.

Right. Let's begin...

First, you will need a program called GCFScape, which you can download Here.[www.nemesis.thewavelength.net]

Install GCFScape.

Now, find your Left 4 Dead 2 Directory and find the 'bin' folder usually found here: C:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\bin

Inside that folder look for a .exe file called 'vpk'. Right click it and select 'Create Shortcut' then drag that shortcut where you can easily find it. Specifically somewhere that would be good for dragging files onto it.

Now find the .vpk file for the Skin you want to install. If that mod came from Gamemaps.com or somewhere similar you should know (hopefully) where you put it and can skip to the next step. [/b]If it was a workshop addon and you don't know where to find it, read on.[/b]

Workshop addons can be found in the 'Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\addons\workshop' directory but you will immediately notice that none of them have names but instead numbers.

The number is that item's Steam ID. On the Steam Workshop find the mod you're subscribed to and look for a string of numbers in the steam address bar at the top of the steam window and search for those numbers.

(To turn it on the Steam Address Bar if it isn't already, inside steam, go to Steam>Interface>Check Box next to 'Display Steam URL Address Bar where available')

Alternatively you can search the folder for the preview picture of the mod you subscribed to. The mod's number will match the number given to the picture

Once you have found your Skin mod, right click it and select 'Open With' then find and select GCFScape. You should get a window with a bunch of folders, one of which will be called 'root' and will be the first folder in the list. Drag and drop it onto your desktop, next to your 'vpk - Shortcut' then close the GCFScape window.

Once you have done that, open up the 'root' folder and find a folder called 'scripts.' Delete it, then close that window.

Right click and rename the 'root' folder something memorable: this will become the name for the edited mod once you repackage it.

Drag and drop the renamed folder ON TOP OF the 'vpk - Shortcut' and it will compile it into a .vpk file which will appear in the same folder the edited skin's folder is in. It will also have the same name as that folder.

Drag your shiney new edited .vpk skin into your 'addons' folder inside your L4D2 directory (you should know where that is by now, right?)

And you're done.

Run the game and make sure the skin works. If it doesn't you probably messed up somewhere or the gun (for some reason) needs scripts to run. Which is very unlikely.

If you still can't get a skin to work for some reason, post a comment in this discussion and ill try to help you out.
