I tested this out and noticed two things:

1. The icon didn't show up but the noise happened and a few zombies spawns
2. The zombies, which spawned 40 units away did not come directly to me

I'm wondering the Wandering Zombie mod is controlling their movement once they spawn and everything else that comes along with it. For example, there's a chance for zombies to home in on you OR flee with that mod.
