What was happening was that I'd be holding something in both hands, such as a metal crate, and then switch character, and the crate my old character was holding would just vanish. Switching back would show that the character no longer had anything in their hands, and as my friend and I tested it standing next to each other, we could confirm it wasn't just dropped, but had actually disappeared. I'll have to get a clean log of it happening the next time the two of us play together (likely tomorrow).
We had only noticed it when making sure everyone's hands were full while transferring stuff from sub to sub, but after realizing the crate had vanished, so I'm sorry if that caused a bit of a misunderstanding.
Edit: Doing some more testing, it appears the AI character isn't dropping the large item, but storing it in some mystery container on the sub. I picked up an EK crate blocker (I made the dumb mistake of using a dugong for testing so I couldn't make and test a steel crate), switched characters, and watched as my old character walked to the supply cabinet in the medical room of the sub, and put the crate block *somewhere*. It certainly couldn't have been placed in the 4-slot supply cabinet, as that was full and wouldn't hold a crate to begin with, and it wasn't in the medical supply cabinet either, as I personally checked that afterward. Gonna test some more.
It turns out I am in fact just losing my mind at the AI being completely incapable of doing the most menial task of just holding onto a box. Still had an AI put a crate blocker in some completely unknown spot of the dugong that logistics search didn't help with at all, but that's a different issue for a different mod.
