Are we talking about the original game? Or it is a mod in which there is no voicing?
Check your sound driver in the Sound options. Try to change it.
I tried in non modded version started via Mod Launcher, and in Gothic Definitive Edition Mod - no voice in first dialogue with Diego, tried also talking to Orry nearby and also no voices sound.
After disabling "Union Patch" and starting Gothic 1 Classic or Gothic Definitive Edition via Mod Launcher - there are voices available.
I will try messing around with Sound driver options as suggested - will let you know after I do it :)
No idea if this information is important, but for Gothic 2 - Union Patch from steam works for me without any problems.
With Union disabled (using default System Pack 1.8) everything seems to work using any of these Proton versions.
BorderlessWindow=1
BorderFix=0
EmulatorMode=1
UPD: AnisotropicFiltering=0
However, I found out that 2 sound drivers are working, but it requires the game restart to actually apply it!
- DirectSoundHW (seems working the best, with reverb effect set to off to fix some sound stuttering)
- RadGameToolsRSX (sound is not that clear and it's causing the framerate to stutter a bit)
The problem with low framerate on GE-Proton still persists, but at least I have a working setup on regular Proton now.
EDIT:
- The sound still stutters sometimes even with DirectSoundHW.
- When using DX 11 renderer with Union, framerate issues on GE-Proton are gone
Same if I copy this version of lib to the workshop SP 1.8 version with Union 1.0m enabled, it starts working.
If you have other problems at the Linux, change the next SystemPack.ini option -> EmulatorMode=true.

2. What GPU do you have?
3. Check the Gothic.ini > zVidResFullscreenX, zVidResFullscreenY - it should be a valid (for example your screen resolution); zVidResFullscreenBPP - it should be '32'
If you have the AMD GPU use the GOG dx7 -> dx9 wrapper (place ddraw.dll to the Gothic/System directory). Or use GD3D11 mod. On some AMD cards cannot be started on the dx7 render.
