Best settings large map?

What do people think are the best settings for tech, date, and growth to have a 'realistic' population?

Im happy with long games, my main issue is running out of tech and still be colonising the core mid-late game.

I would also like to know the answer to this question. As well as what is the optimal number of AI regular empires to ensure only major factions expand and minor powers stay relatively small.
