Start is pure luck
Having watched the Mod authors play through I decided to give the mod a try.
Like the Dead Planet start in RE your start is 100% pure luck (took 4 attempts on the dead planet scenario to get a viable start).
I'm playing the first 'arid' planet (3rd start option). My first try had 1 water source within 1Km of the cryo bunker and 1 Junk store with Oxygen tanks and fuel tanks. Problem was there were no sources of food within 5km, the vessel spawns were appalling but the average 70c high during the day pretty much every direction within 3km was the main killer, apart from no food.

My second and current start is marginally better. Only 1 junk store this time, and the only one within 5km of the cryo bunker. Only 1 direction, and its the direct route to the savannah biome 5km away (which took me over 4 hours to find), has 70C daily highs. The junk store is pretty much useless 4 internal solar panels and 2 capacitors. Lots of nice vessel spawns, which would have made finding the savanah much easier except all completely unusable. The salavage coe is locked so can't be used (and I'm now level 7 having just found the savannah biome) and with out being able to get the vast quantity of engineering salvae needed to build scrap thrusters the 1 HV that had a core can't be used because it has no forward/reverse thrusters (it needs 2 thrusters minimum to make it usable). Thankfully I don't have a food issue this time although fuel is a major problem. The close water source is too small and shallow to have any shale rock, the next closest (3km) is a pollution source and the direct route is guarded by what on RE would be a wrath worm queen. There is a large water source about 7km away but without any viable transport it's not feasible to explore currently.

Arid starts can be a bit rough, agreed. Some of those first quests to make bandages and such can lead to long hunts for plant protein, herbal leaves, etc. Vessel spawns around the starting area are usually poor so expect to do a lot of scrapping. I usually build a couple regular cores at least before getting far enough to unlock the claim core. It adds a bit of a challenge in using those non-reusable cores wisely to gather scrap and components. Arid start is my favorite though, it makes me hustle. ;)

Much like the Dead planet starts in Eden and RE I love them to me it's not just surviving it's about thriving in those dead worlds. Have played the arid starts and love them to though does a lot of grind to get anywhere. Again i try to learn to thrive before I leave these worlds.

Lots and lots of grind it's true but worth it when you can build a new CV to go out there in the galaxy. have had it so hot you had to work at night or so cold you could freeze to death before you could make a heater. yep lots of fun.
