Did you find the one in the orbit of your start planet? Could be the issue, I've never tried completing this one elsewhere.
If you did try that one, then there should be a way to reset mission progress on rank 5 to start so you can try again. Think I saw knowitall say somewhere that you can place a core of your own and destroy(shoot) it to complete.
If someone has already "found" one in the start system you just need to find a new one in and approach it and it should work.
