About Update 1.8
We have minor changes to the balance and AI behaviour (competition for magical artifacts may be a bit more acrimonious), and a few minor details have been changed/added. Let's start at the beginning...

Source trait rework

All sources have been merged into one trait (except Yaga's Blood, which has remained separate but no longer counts as a source i.e. does not unlock Arcane Focus). In fact, the Unstable Source and Chosen One trait still exist as separate traits, but this is a temporary way to avoid insta crashes when loading older saves. These traits can no longer be acquired other than with the console (and even then they may not work properly). They will be removed completely in the future.

Now source trait has two 'XP tracks' that define the type of this source.
  • Instability - This value is always 0 at the beginning, but between the ages of 5 and 7 it can rise dramatically. A source with more than 30 instability is considered unstable, and can cause Magic Eruptions, as I wrote about previously. Stabilising a source is now more of a process than a single action.
  • Magic Potential - This is the innate talent to use magic and a measure of the strength of the source. This value is determined at birth, and is mostly random, although various factors can influence it (for example, the potential has a chance to be a little higher if both parents have sources). The magic potential may increase a little during childhood or during source stabilisation, but will generally not change significantly over a lifetime. If you were born with a weak source, it is likely to stay that way. Most sources have a medium or low potential - you should be happy if you have 60+, and sad if it's less than 20. The highest levels (80 - 'Powerful Source' and 100 - 'Chosen One') are almost unattainable.

Cyrographs

I wasn't entirely satisfied with the way the demons get their Hell Powers. Now demonic XP will not grow passively over time, demons have to earn their powers. 'Propose a Cyrograph' is a new interaction available to each demon. In this way, a mutually beneficial (let's say) contract can be made between a demon and a mortal.
As a result, the latter receives immediate access to magic (i.e. unlocking Arcane Focus) either a source trait or an increase in magic potential. The exact benefits of the deal depend on the demon's strength - mortals with high diplomacy can negotiate slightly better terms as well.
What profit does the demon have? Of course, he receives the mortal soul, although it is useless as long as the mortal body is still alive. The contract is signed for a certain period of time (10, 20 or 30 years) after which the demon has the right to send the mortal to hell. Only then the soul can be consumed and turned into Hell's Power XP.
Of course... you can sign the contract and kill the mortal immediately afterwards, but technically this is breaking the contract, so you will receive much less XP.
Despite the promise of power, not everyone likes the idea of selling their soul. Ambitious characters, power-hungry witches or corrupt rulers may be interested in such a deal.

Cyrographs can be important even if you're not playing as a demon. Who knows, maybe one day some demon will make you an interesting proposition...

Grand Coalition

A new ending crisis may arise, although it is different from the others - this time you do not have to fight supernatural forces. As you conquer more lands with the help of magic and cunning, the other rulers don't have to watch passively. They can unite and declare war on you together to stop the threat.
The crisis begins with an ultimatum you get from the chief witch-hunter - prison and witch trial or war. If you refuse, this war ('War Against the Witch') will start some time later and any ruler not involved in the wars, who does not have a truce with you and is not your ally, can join it on the side of the hunters. In many cases it will be a struggle of you versus the rest of the world.
The stakes of war are high. Your defeat means you will lose your magic items and be burned as a witch. Most of the adult members of your house will be imprisoned and will have to go through a witch trial. Your Coven will be shattered. If you win, the world will have to recognise your place in history as a great ruler and all faiths will increase their level of acceptance of witchcraft.
Setting hunter activity to low will disable this crisis.
BTW you also may sometimes launch the Grand Coalition war when you play as a witch hunter - via Stop the witch interaction.

Other stuff
  • Witch Hunters can sometimes turn into Fallen Witch Hunters and start practising witchcraft. This also happens automatically if they become corrupt.
  • The bonus to reduce the cooldown of magical research has been moved from Research Cooperation (a temporary modifier) to the Academy of Magic (a place of power). Other places of power have also received improvements.
  • Power Strike interaction can no longer be used to force a mage duel or against a magic user. But the Mage Duel interaction now has the option to force a duel even if the other party disagrees - physical contact is required here, however. Well, and unless you are at war with each other, such an action is considered very dishonourable.
  • I have rewritten the system for triggering crises - in result we have a new game rule to delay their arrival - you can simply set a period of time when crises will definitely not occur. The default setting (At any time) does not mean that a crisis can trigger immediately at the start of the game - as before, you have to meet the crisis conditions for it to start. I have written a bit about the conditions here.
  • Grand Rite always restores Power Saturation if it is held in a place of power. Otherwise there is only a 50% chance.
  • Magic Catalyst no longer increases the bonus to Power Clash (mage duels were too easy). Instead, its bonus from collecting power saturation has increased from 50% -> 100%.
  • There are some small changes and tweaks.

Everything I have written about above may need to be adjusted, so some parameters/mechanics may change in the future.
That's all from me. Let me know if you find any bugs, and good luck ;)

Could there please be other sources to improve souce? Seems really limiting to just leave it to RNG to get a good child with source. Maybe using the darkblade to devour someones source and gain exp that way? Or through other means?

@Darkstar151
But that is what should be very limited ;) Most sources are weak (which still gives you an advantage over most people who are completely devoid of magical talent), so you'll better appreciate when you hit a strong source ;p And of course, a mage's strength is not only determined by their innate power/talent, but also by technique and knowledge (i.e. knowledge of spells, results of magical research, secret knowledge, etc).

Admittedly, the magic potential draw algorithm may need adjusting, this is something I am considering.

I can give you a hint that there are currently two repeatable ways to increase Magic Potential. The first, is the ultimate spell, here there are no limits . The second is the mana siphon spell, with this you can suck the magical potential out of another character with a source (although no one will be willing to do such a deal, except your prisoners, who have no choice ;p). This way allows you to raise the potential to 80 (but it's a long and tedious process).

And remember to complete Arcana Legacy, the last perk permanently increases magic potential by 5 for the entire dynasty (of course refers to a characters with a source).

Got a game with apocalyptic black death as grand equalizer, didn't start game as witch, pesky prisoners hide their artifacts before I can nab them (about four times at row), low gold reserves and small army (hve about 75% of Persia+Egypt with 15k troops and allied with 5k Bizantium)

Getting Coalition war against 400k on my head is a fun experience, and that's still tribal era (78 years after start) :D
Imo, I'd advise to add it as game rule (If I didn't miss it), like I've passed over 3 generation of rulers and none of them even reached Secret Knowledge 50.

And maybe, if possible - give it Crusade preparation mechanics (or was it CK2 exclusive system?). And let witch vassals join the war as allies
Some timer would be much appreciated, at the very least

Remember that there is now a game rule that can delay the arrival of crises.

Greetings!
During translation I found an error in the localization file witch_ep7_l_english. Since I did not find a section with bugs, I will write here.

Line 290: activity_magic_rite_province_power_place_desc:0 "#P +++ Place of Power#!\n

The closing quote is missing.

You're right, thanks ;)

Found another bug. The translation for the Crown of Shadows artifact is not applied. For the name and description of the item (lines 85 and 86: crown_shadows and crown_shadows_desc).
I assumed that I made a mistake in the variable, but replacing it with a "correct" one didn't work. Replacing the strings did nothing either. Unfortunately, I don't know much about modding, otherwise I would have looked more in-depth.

I don't understand what you mean. In the eng version the name and description are displayed. These phrases do not contain any variables.
Madd Martigan 16 Aug, 2024 @ 3:39pm
hey just curious how does one becomes a demon now ?
ryciebani666  [developer] 17 Aug, 2024 @ 12:59am
Ascendency special project or Abbadon's summons and adoption.
Tamborine Williams 25 Aug, 2024 @ 12:37pm
How does the Source Lifestyle work when creating a new custom character? Since magic potential is given a random stat at birth, when I start the game with a custom character, said character always has zero magic potential.
ryciebani666  [developer] 25 Aug, 2024 @ 1:40pm
@Tamborine Williams
Yes, if you add a source for yourself in the character creator, it will have 0 XP. Only your offspring will have a chance to get more value (as long as they get a source). Perhaps at some point I'll consider solving this at the game rules level.
himmel123 29 Aug, 2024 @ 10:35am
@Tamborine If you want to modify the potential you can use:
effect = { add_trait_xp = {trait = source track=magic_potential value=123}}
The Value can be positive or negative and something like 100 should max it out to The chosen.
@himmel123
Thank you so much!
