Death by healing
So, is "Regrow Limbs" in protector supposed to have a death chance? Miner had his arm shot off by a mechanoid charge lance, and once he was back on his feet (still some blood loss status, but back to work), I hit him with the psycast. He died (almost?) immediately. Cause of death: Regeneration. Is this intended behavior, or some weird interaction with the discomfort mechanic of regrowth pushing past some kind of pain threshold? Target was psychically sensitive if that has any effect.

The troubleshooting forum on the official rimworld discord is the best place to ask about this sort of thing. You'll get faster response times, more thorough answers, and learn a lot on the way. Steam is okay-ish, but it's really not the best platform for lengthy technical discussions. Discord is better for real time discussions, and supports everything from screenshots to screenshare.

https://discord.gg/rimworld

Just remember to follow the pins, and ask for help if you don't know what the pins are talking about. Verify files, take a hugslog, post it, etc. Who knows, you might even see Oskar himself pop over to say hi.

Once you find the answers your looking for, by all means come back to the steam forums and make a post for posterity. The weakness of Discord is the lack of archive searching tools.

Okay, but the question "is this intended behavior" (does regeneration have a failure rate) is not a lengthily discussion.

In modding, there is no discussion that is not lengthy.

I wrote a wall of text, but I deleted it. TLDR, go to rimworld discord, then troubleshooting. Fun guys, good guys, they know what questions to ask. I've gotten help from them in the past, so I can tell you from experience that things are rarely as simple as they appear.

It's not the pain threshold, it's the hit points. Like how enemies seem to "heal" when you cut off a limb, but in reverse — suddenly all those removed parts are factored into health all at once which kills the pawn due to too low hp.

I'm pretty confident this wasn't intended, as it was not an issue with the original Regrow Limbs, which I believe only grew one part at a time. They understandably buffed it to regenerate multiple parts at once buttttt well, this seems to be the side effect

So, as things stand currently: don't use regrow limbs to regrow an entire arm. If you have "shoulder: shot off", your pawn WILL DIE. Legs seem to be fine, and lesser amounts of arm are probably fine too.

I mentioned this in comment and bug report, but I'll explain here. What PetLoverSpy said is correct. A pawn can die from losing too many hitpoints. Losing a toe loses you 8 hitpoints. Losing all 5 toes on a foot means you've lost 40 hitpoints. A foot is 20 hitpoints. You would think that losing the toes and the foot would mean you've lost 60 hitpoints, but actually if you lose a limb that had other appendages that were lost on it it will cancel out the other appendages for the main limb, so actually instead of losing 60 hitpoints the 40 hitpoints from the lost toes no longer apply - so technically the pawn gets healed.

Regenerate can cause all the limbs to return at once with 1 hitpoint remaining, meaning all of the hitpoint loss applies for every limb.

Oskar said that this should be corrected in the next update.

Fantastic to hear that they can fix it pretty quickly!

Yeah, I did the math on it and regenerating a leg is *just* under the death line, while regenerating from the shoulder is well over it (145 vs 190)

If you have one of the anti-instadeath mods, like "No More Damage Threshhold", that should fix it. I'm guessing what the mod authors are doing is finding a way to implement that mod's functionality, without conflicting with that mod if it happens to be in your modlist.
