Research setbacks and breakthroughs

I absolutely adore your mod, man. It's super vanilla-worthy.

Before continuing bear in mind that i have no idea how this game works technically.

I think it would be well-balanced with random or less random setbacks and breakthroughs.

The way I see it is you could have 3 outcomes to each activity. By activity I mean: analysis, prototyping, theoretical research, manufacturing experience, building experience.

Outcome one, let's say: 70% probability - progress as usual
Outcome two, let's say 20% probability - setback
Outcome three, let's say 10% probability - breakthrough

Reasoning behind this:

In normal research/investigative work you just progress. Then in some places you'll have setbacks: "Analyzing this piece of steel yielded results that make our assumptions void". Instead of progressing a set amount, you regress X times the expected progress.

In other cases, some things were just so ahead that it jumpstarts our ideas "Good thing we've put this part in here, it will also help with these new edge cases".

Please don't think i'm demanding anything of you, just sharing some thoughts :)
