Note i got no mod called vanillagenesexpanded at all.
This dissapeared when i removed vanilla framework expanded.

again please let me know what other mods you are running. Vanilla Genes Expanded is part of the new code added to VEF, it's not a separate mod. I also get an error like this but it looks fine in game

So not alot of mods, and as i said, it got fixed after i removed VEF, i.e i get no issues using it with these mods only.

the clash may be with Facial Animation, I still couldn't replicate your issue but at least there is a similar portrait error popup when selecting the xenotype. I left a comment there and just disabled my VE patch for now, so it'll just work as it did before I added it. I think Facial Animation's existing xenotype shader might be clashing with the VE one.
